One of the best ways to enjoy the holiday season is by creating special family traditions leading up to Christmas and New Year’s. For instance, decorating can become a family affair, when you all spend an evening putting the Christmas tree together. Or better yet, cook up a batch of handsome gingerbread men and women, and sugar cookies, and spend an evening decorating them with lots of icing and candy.
You can also make nightly reading time a part of your bedtime routine with kiddos. Take this opportunity to share a daily tradition of reading a Christmas poem together. To make things easier, we have gathered plenty of Christmas poems for kids that have fun-loving and whimsical verses and are great for early readers. After reading them, your tots will surely go to bed having visions of Santa Claus, reindeer, and a dozen other fanciful holiday images that will fill them up with the spirit of the season.
10 Fun Christmas Poems For Kids
Christmas Stars
The golden Christmas stars shine down,
With a cheerful Christmas glow,
And twinkle a Yuletide message
To the busy world below,
They tell of the peace and goodwill,
The Christmas time brings to earth,
The peace and good will all should feel
At this season of joy and mirth.
By Marie Irish
A Visit From St. Nicholas
‘Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there;
The children were all snuggled snug in their beds
While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap…
By Clement Clarke Morre
I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
I heard the bells on Christmas Day,
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
By Henry Wordsworth Longfellow
A Chubby Little Snowman
A chubby little snowman
Had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny
And what o you suppose?
That hungry little bunny
Looking for some lunch,
Grabbed the snowman’s nose,
Nibble, nibble, crunch!

A Christmas Angel
Oh, I wish I was an angel on the tree,
Oh, I wish I was an angel on the tree
I’d give every girl and boy
Lots of Christmas peace and joy
Oh, I wish I was an angel on the tree
By Denise Burke
Five Little Reindeer
Five little reindeer playing in the snow
The first one said, “Can you see my nose glow?”
The second one said, “Listen to me sing!”
The third one said, “I can hear the bells ring.”
The fourth one said, “Let’s eat the pie!”
The fifth one said, “I am ready to fly!”
Then clomp went their hooves
And the snow fell white
As the five little reindeer flew out of sight!

Snowball
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as it could be
I thought I’d keep it as a pet,
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pyjamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away
But first it wet the bed.
By Shel Silverstein
Christmas Dog
Tonight’s my first night as a watchdog,
And here it is Christmas Eve.
The children are sleeping all cosy upstairs,
While I am guardin’ the stockings and the tree!

The Day Before Christmas
We have been helping with the cake,
And licking out the pan
And wrapping up our packages,
As neatly as we can
We have hung our stockings up
Besides the open grate.
And now there’s nothing more to do,
Except
To
Wait.

Mom Is Making Christmas
Cookies baking in the kitchen
The smell floats through the air;
Mom is making Christmas
With her usual merry flair
The house she gaily decorated
Each gift she stitched with love,
And we will gather around the Christmas tree
For an evening of old-fashioned fun.
This evening she will sin a carol for us
With her angel voice.
Yes, Mom is making Christmas
A true reason to rejoice
