Growing up, I didn’t have many strong, opinionated and self-driven role-models. The princesses I read about were always whisked away by their prince charming and ‘saved’. So what is it that was missing? Where were the women who would motivate me? This National Girl Child Day, I made a list of 10 books with female protagonists who will empower you.

Roald Dahl has always been a favourite and this book is just another reason to fall in love with the intricate characters he creates.

3. Wizard Of Oz By L. Frank Baum
Classics are called so because they’re evergreen. A girl’s journey of self-discovery that takes you on a rollercoaster ride, this is one book I can read even as a 20-something.
4. Pippi Longstocking By Astrid Lindgren
One of my personal favourites as a kid, this book will teach you how to be weird and crazy in the best possible way and never care about what the world says!
5. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls By Elena Favilli & Francesca Cavallo
A modern twist on the stereotypical fairy tales that you grew up reading. This book is a must-read for any girl who never identified with fragile princesses that needed to be saved.
6. I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban By Malala Yousafzai
A true story of a girl that begun a revolution. Anybody looking for an amazing role model?
7. The Book Thief By Markus Zusak
A long read but totally worth it! This book takes you back to World War II from a young girl’s perspective.
