6 Simple Switches To Make In Your Beauty Routine For A More Sustainable Future

There is no hiding the fact that the beauty industry is a major contributor to the waste generated globally. If you love using q-tips or still cleanse your face using facial wipes then you’re part of the problem. Did you know that according to a study by Zero Waste, 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the cosmetic industry and most of this isn’t recyclable? A lot of these are plastic and your single moisturiser tub can take nearly 1,000 years to decompose. What? Add to this- wrappings, paper inserts, cardboard sleeves, foam, mirrored glass, etc and you can just imagine how much of a toll the Earth is taking for our consumerist attitude.

We aren’t here to shame you, rather tell you that another way is possible. For world environment day, we’re sharing some simple ways in which you can revamp your beauty routine for a more sustainable future.

Bar Soaps FTW

Remember the good old days when we only used bar soaps? Well, they’re actually way better for the environment than your body washes and face washes. They usually come in plastic-free packaging and are now formulated with power-packed ingredients that can really nourish the skin.

Break Up With Facial Wipes

Facial wipes are actually bad for your skin and the environment. Yes, they really remove waterproof mascara and are handy to use when you’re too lazy to go to the bathroom and remove your makeup but they are just single-use products that are piling up one on top of the other in a landfill. Instead, use a microfiber towel as it can be washed and reused.

Say Goodbye To Plastic Q-Tips

If you’re one of those people who need to clean their ears after a shower then we’re here to show you some eco-friendly alternatives to plastic q-tips. Some are made with bamboo and can be decomposed while others are reusable ones that just need to be washed with soap and water.

Pick Sustainable Razors

Bid farewell to the plastic razors that you use and throw and switch to bamboo instead. We go through these products so quickly and don’t realise the strain that the planet is taking for us. So, next time you want to shave, make a sustainable choice.

Invest In Refillable Makeup Products

Love that face pallete? Well, at some point you’re going to hit pan and throw it out. But if you buy products from brands that will refill your items, you’ll be able to reuse that packaging for a much longer time.

Switch To Reef-Friendly Ingredients

Did you know that chemicals in some cosmetic products, especially sunscreens and even cleansing balms can be extremely harmful to coral reefs? Studies have shown that about 10% of the reefs have suffered as a result of sunscreen bleaching. A common ingredient in sunscreen called Oxybenzone washes off your skin and gets into the water. The chemical then gets absorbed by corals causing a domino effect on everything from the corals to marine life. Hence, using ones that are reef-friendly is the need of the hour.

Robert Swan once said, “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” So, let’s take it upon ourselves to be the change and make a difference.
