Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most-anticipated movie, Gangubai Kathiawadi, is going to release on February 25 and the first thing we want to say is—finallyyy! Its trailer dropped almost a year ago and we had been waiting to watch the film ever since then. Alia Bhatt will be seen as the titular character in the intense drama based on the life of Gangubai, a famous brothel owner from Mumbai’s Kamathipura. The story is adapted from one of the chapters of the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, authored by Hussain Zaidi.
Recently, the actress announced the release date of the movie on her Instagram handle and talked about the obstacles the project faced over the years. Alia began shooting the film in 2019 and it took the entire team two years to wrap it up. In the caption, she wrote, “This film and set have been through two lockdowns.. two cyclones.. director and actor getting covid during the making!!! The troubles the set has faced is another film altogether! Being directed by sir (SLB) has been a dream all my life, but I don’t think anything would have prepared me for the journey I was on for these two years. I walk out of this set a diff person today! I love you, sir!”

Gangubai Kathiawadi is going to be a one-woman show and we’re so excited about it. As per stories, Gangubai was betrayed by her lover and sold to a Kamthipura brothel. She slowly accepted her situation and gradually rose to power with the help of the underworld. Alia will play the role of a phoenix who will rise from her own ashes. It will definitely be her most powerful character to date and we are sure that she’s going to ace it. While talking about her experience, she added in the caption, “When a film ends a part of you ends with it! Today I’ve lost a part of me.. Gangu I love you! You will be missed♥️”

SLB’s Larger Than Life Direction
When it comes to period dramas, there’s hardly anyone better than SLB in Bollywood. He is returning to the silver screen seven years later as his last movie, Bajirao Mastani, released in 2015. Gangubai Kathiawadi will take us back to the ’60s and we can already see that the director has paid attention to every minute detail in the trailer. We’re expecting the movie to be larger-than-life in every possible way and transport us back to the golden era.
