Indian daily soaps are in totes celebratory mood ATM and we’re loving it. Our fave TV jodi are getting married on-screen and their shaadi festivities are winning our hearts. Anupama and Anuj are finally tying the knot on Anupama and OMG, they are looking adorable together. Akshara and Abhimanyu also got hitched on Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai recently. And their grand celebration of love is giving us major #CoupleGoals. While these are two different shows, these unions have one thing in common—both the couples are breaking stereotypes and we are loving it.
On one hand, Anuj and Anupama proved that there’s no ‘right’ age to find love, start a fresh chapter in life and take control of your narrative into your own hands. On the other hand, Akshara and Abhimanyu challenged all the sexist Hindu wedding rituals set by our society and gave us more reasons to root for them.
Abhimanyu, right before leaving for his baraat, asked his mother to perform his pagdi rasam, which according to Indian customs is performed by the groom’s father. He said that they shouldn’t discriminate on the basis of gender and that his mother had all the rights to perform every ritual at his wedding. Not just that, he questioned age-old beliefs that expected brides to ‘compromise and adjust’ as per their sasural’s traditions. He asked his family members to welcome Akshara wholeheartedly and make all necessary changes to get her comfortable in her new house.
The best part about the wedding was when he asked his bride to put sindoor on his head as well. Not going to lie, it reminded us of Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha Paul’s shaadi and we absolutely loved it. Interestingly, after the nuptials, Akshara did not leave for her in-laws’ house in a car. She rode her bike and made her hubby sit behind her. Now, that’s a type of vidaai we wanna see IRL as well.
TBH, #Abhira’s wedding will be a game-changer in the Indian television industry. There was a time when Hindi daily soaps were criticised for promoting sexist stereotypes. We are glad that this show is offering us a progressive plot and fresh narrative—something we had been waiting for years.
We hope that the show maintains its engrossing storyline and gives us more reasons to ship #Abhira.
