Gangubai Kathiawadi
TBH, when we first saw the trailer of this film, we weren’t excepting it to knock our socks off. But to our surprise, this historical spectacle had all the elements of a super hit movie. The story is about the real-life social activist and prostitute Gangubai Kathiawadi, and the film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. However, all credit must be given to the main lead Alia Bhatt, who essayed the role of Gangubai with pure honesty. Not to mention, the film beautifully shows us how a girl, who was once sold to a brothel reclaims her power with her connections to the underworld. In case you missed watching this film, it is currently streaming on Netflix.
Badhaai Do
It’s not very often that we see interesting queer love stories in Bollywood. However, Badhaai Do is an exception as it is not only engaging but also equal parts entertaining. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, this movie is about a closeted gay cop who marries a lesbian PT teacher to save face in the society. Now streaming on Netflix, this movie throws light on the hardships of same-sex couples in a society like India. But the real stars of the movie are leads Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, who committed to their characters from start to finish. Also, it does help to have a solid supporting cast, who make the movie relatable for it’s viewers.
The Kashmir Files
This film is a heart-wrenching tale about the Kashmiri Pandit community in the 90s, who had to flee from Kashmir due to socio-political reasons. It manages to capture the suffering and struggle of the Hindu minority, during that time. Although some scholars claim that it this story is largely fictionalised, it makes for a great watch, nonetheless. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, head over to Zee 5, where this film is being currently streamed.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
One of the biggest hits of 2022, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 truly triumphed in the horror-comedy space and is currently streaming on Netflix. With no shortage of funny quips or jump scares, this movie will have you clutched to your seats from the word start. Without revealing any spoilers, all we have to say is that Tabu stole the show with her convincing acting skills. And Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani, too, shined with their sizzling chemistry.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva
For the first time, Bollywood released a superhero franchise, and we’re happy to say that we weren’t disappointed. This Ayan Mukerji project blends Indian mythology with sci-fi elements, making it an absolute must-watch. Full of superheroes, badass villains, and a moving backstory, there wasn’t a single minute that we were left bored. The music and screenplay, too, helped in keeping us gripped to the storyline. Also, it goes without saying, but the leads Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt nailed their acting bits. If you want to witness this cinematic masterpiece, head over to Disney+ hoststar ASAP.
Anek
Anek was definitely one of the most underrated films of 2022. This action-thriller is about a rebellion and revolves around a secret agent, who is sent to the Northeast to negotiate a peace deal between the government and the separatist groups of the same place. This deeply-political film will have you asking important questions about nationality and patriotism. So, if you’re intrigued to watch this layered narrative about a possible peace treaty, then you can catch this movie on Netflix.
Jugjugg Jeeyo
