The Ayodhya case has been at the front and centre of political and communal discourse for close to 65 years. The Supreme Court verdict today, November 9, 2019, brought the Ram Janmabhoomi–Babri Masjid land dispute to an end. A five-judge constitution-bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and other justices like S A Bobde, S Abdul Nazeer, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan delivered the final verdict.
The Ayodhya case dates back to 1529 when a commander named Mir Baqu from Mughal Emperor Babur constructed the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. A plot of land, 2.77 acres in size has been tearing through the country’s political and religious divide ever since. Campaigners of Hindu faith have been pushing to build a temple on the land claiming that it was the birthplace of Lord Ram while people of Muslim faith have been petitioning to keep the mosque on land arguing that there is no evidence to prove that a temple ever existed there.
The Supreme Court delivered its verdict at 10.30 AM today. The final verdict paved the way for the construction of the Ram Temple on the disputed land and a formation of a Trust that will manage it, while a separate 5-acre plot has been allocated to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque.
As messages of love, peace and unity took over twitter the hashtags #HinduMuslimBhaiBhai, #AyodhyaJudgement and #AyodhyaVerdict were trending in the country.
