A study published in the journal JAMA Dermatology found that more than 80% of people groom their pubic hair. From completely wiping out the bush to simply trimming it, each of them have their own regime for pubes.
But what about the ones who like to keep things natural? Well, there’s really no fuss with keeping your fuzz. In fact, we’re all for body hair. However, there’s one slight complication that your ungroomed pubes can cause. If use a sanitary napkin, that bush can make you quite uncomfortable while you are on your period. We spoke to with Dr. Amit Patil, Consultant IVF, Obs & Gynecology, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Mumbai to tell us how and here’s everything you need to know:
Pubic Hair Can Make Your Period Difficult
Isn’t it annoying when the long pubic hair rubs on your pad every time you move? Ouch! It surely is. “Pubic hair soaked in blood or sticking to a blood-laden sanitary napkin can lead to a lot of discomfort,” says Dr. Amit. But the problem doesn’t end here. He adds that the constant rubbing can lead to breakage of the pubic hair. Wait, what? Aren’t period cramps painful enough?!
It Can Cause Irritation
The continuous contact between your ungroomed pubic hair and your sanitary napkin can also cause friction. “This friction can lead to irritation, rashes, redness, and itching,” warns Dr Amit.
You Might Get A Follicular Infection
The pubic hair breakage can lead to inflammation of the hair follicle. This situation can get aggravated by your bacteria-laden period blood. Dr Amit explains how: “When the bacteria in the blood comes in contact with the inflamed hair follicle, it can infect it and give rise to painful, pus-filled pimples. In fact, it can even turn into a dangerous follicular infection that may require surgical intervention.”
Hey, don’t let all this info scare you into breaking your resolve to keep your bush intact. Instead, switch to menstrual cups and you’ll be fine. “Since menstrual cups are worn internally, there’s no chance of it making any contact with your pubic hair,” says Dr. Amit. This means that using menstrual cups can mitigate the risk of an infection and prevent discomfort, rashes, and itching.
