Trolls are obsessive beings. Once something catches their attention, they’d be after it with their lives. Ace couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee seems to be the latest on their radar. They have been commenting on his posts and consistently asking, “Why are your models so sad?” Guess what? I have the answer. I know why Sabyasachi models look so glum all the time. Read on:
They Are Called ‘Models’ For A Reason!
As a general fashion rule, models are discouraged from exuding personality because that can overpower the clothes. Their job here is to showcase the garments without hogging the limelight.
All the Sabya models are beautiful in their own right and the designer gets it. If they start smiling or emoting in the pictures, the focus shifts from the artisanal masterpieces that he is creating. That’s also why Sabya models are made not to look like brides even while wearing bridal couture!
He Made You Look!
These aren’t bad models and that ain’t bad photography. It is all planned. See how this Instagram user has dissed everything while still calling the clothes “beautiful”? That’s exactly what these pictures were supposed to do—admire the beauty of these clothes. The light might be dull. The makeup might be less than minimal. And Sabyasachi’s clothes will still look beautiful!
There’s More To Women Than Beautiful Smiles!
Let me pull up a piece of history here. Did you know that it wasn’t until the 1960s that haughty, angry models became a fashion norm? Interestingly, the timeline coincides with the second wave of feminism. It was time for women to start rebelling against the stereotypical representation of them in the mainstream media. There couldn’t have been a more subversive way of doing that than as a model! Also, just because a woman isn’t smiling doesn’t mean she is “sad”!
So, can we please move on and stop asking Sabyasachi models to “smile”?
