Who Does Makeup Better: Mumbai Or Delhi?

I’m originally from Delhi, so when I came to Mumbai I carried a plethora of my favourite essentials. Powder foundations, bronzers, you know the drill. But after a few months, I was barely using anything.

This got me thinking. Mumbai and Delhi have gone head to head over many things: food, people, fashion—but what about their makeup? Is there really a difference between a Delhi girl’s everyday makeup routine vs a Mumbaiker’s?

Weather is, undoubtedly, a pivotal factor in determining the makeup routine that rules a city. Delhi’s dry climate, beating sun, and polluted air pose challenges such as dry skin, dandruff, and blackheads. It calls for a makeup routine that provides coverage and protection against harsh elements.

On the other hand, Mumbai’s humid weather and heavy monsoons demand makeup that is lightweight, sweat-proof, and resistant to the elements. Here’s all you’ll need basis the city you’re in.

The Delhi Drama Look

Start with a clean face and apply a good moisturiser. This creates a smooth canvas for makeup and prevents your skin from drying out in the weather.

Use a silicone-based primer for a matte finish that withstands the Delhi heat.

Opt for long-wearing foundations and concealers with oil control and a matte finish. These products are designed to prevent makeup from melting or smudging.

Emphasise your eyes and lips for a standout look. Use long-wearing eyeshadows, preferably matte, to prevent creasing. Waterproof gel or liquid eyeliners will stay in place. For lips, choose long-lasting lipsticks or lip stains with a matte or satin finish, as they have better staying power.

Keep blotting papers in your purse to combat excess oil and shine throughout the evening. Gently blot your T-zone whenever necessary.

The Mumbai Monsoon Look

Begin with a gentle cleanser to remove any excess oils and impurities. Follow with a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to hydrate your skin without adding extra shine.

Apply a mattifying primer to control oil and create a smooth base for your makeup. This step is crucial in preventing your makeup from melting or sliding off in Mumbai’s humid conditions.

Opt for a lightweight, water-based foundation or a BB cream with a matte finish. These products are better suited for monsoon weather as they provide coverage without feeling heavy on your skin. It’s best to steer clear of a heavy-duty foundation in this city.

Choose waterproof makeup products, including mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow if possible. Keep your eye makeup simple with waterproof mascara and eyeliner. Avoid heavy eyeshadow that can crease in the humidity.

For lips, go for long-wearing lip tints or stains that provide colour without the risk of smudging. Matte lipsticks can also be a good choice.

Use a translucent setting powder to lock your makeup in place and control shine. Finish with a setting spray to ensure your makeup stays intact even in the humidity and rain.

What’s The Verdict?

While, the Delhi routine focuses on matte, long-lasting products to combat the heat and maintain a flawless appearance, the Mumbai routine prioritises lightweight, waterproof options to withstand the humidity and sudden rain showers.

Personally, I prefer the Mumbai method. It’s glowy, not too heavy, and lets you sweat without worrying about ruining your look.
