Deepika Padukone Reveals She Was Afraid Of Being ‘Written Off’ From Bollywood For This Surprising Reason
A remarkable actress, philanthropist, film producer and fashion icon—Deepika Padukone is the undisputed queen of Bollywood (and our hearts). We still remember the moment we saw the diva on our screens for the very first time as the dreamy girl Shanti Priya in Om Shanti Om. Since then, the actress has constantly pushed the envelope with unconventional roles in films like Chhapak, Cocktail, and Aarakshan to name a few. However, for Deepika, her Bollywood journey was anything but easy.
Recently, DP got candid about how worried she was about her ‘South Indian accent’ and if it would affect her Bollywood career. In an interview with a leading magazine, she shared, “I did not have a natural inroad into Bollywood. My South Indian accent was also frowned upon and I initially worried about being written off because of it.”
Deepika confessed, “As an outsider to the industry, I inadvertently ended up becoming an observer, which I believe has enabled me to change the status quo. Earlier, I probably didn’t have the confidence or the clout to be able to effect change, but the desire for it was always there. Even as a child, I was always curious about why things were done a certain way. I would never take anything lying down or be satisfied with things being handed to me on a platter.”
We have a lot to say about this! We are hella impressed by Deepika’s honesty as she addressed her insecurities as an outsider in the industry. NGL, Bollywood can be a daunting place for an outsider but the Piku star’s journey is the proof that agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho; to puri kainaat usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai!
Deepika’s journey in the film industry has been nothing less than inspirational and her ability to step into a character’s shoes is incredible. Over the years, DP has constantly reinvented herself with her films and performances. Not only is she a director’s delight, she always manages to floor her audience too with her brilliance as an actor.
It’s safe to say that Deepika has managed to look past her insecurities and turned into a role model for millions of women. You go, gurl!
