Moisturisers Vs Hydrators: Update Your Skincare Knowledge & Give Your Skin What It Needs

If you are skincare-obsessed, then you’ve probably come across these two products- moisturiser and hydrator. These two words are the most common, yet most mistaken terms used in skincare. If you think they are one and the same thing, we hate to break it to you but you’re wrong. Moisturisers and hydrators have different roles and it’s important to choose the right one for your skin type.

Difference Between Hydrator & Moisturiser

Hydrators help absorb water from the atmosphere and infuse it into your skin cells, leaving your skin looking plump, brighter and soft. Most hydrators are infused with ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, honey and hyaluronic acid which help increase the water levels in the epidermis leaving it soft, smooth and supple.

Moisturiser, on the other hand, is used to help lock in moisture on the skin’s surface. There are plenty of moisturisers available in the market. Some contain occlusive ingredients which means they create a physical barrier to trap the moisture in the skin or they can be emollient based which can possess occlusive properties along with skin-softening ingredients like butters, oils, esters, lipids, and fatty acids.

Now that you know the difference between the two, the next question that arises is which one to choose? Scroll down to find out.

When To Use Hydrators

If you are suffering from dry skin, you need to include hydrators into your skincare routine. Due to the lack of moisture, the skin starts to feel tight and flaky. If it goes untreated it can lead to eczema and psoriasis. So, whether you have dry skin all year round or it’s seasonal, when your skin starts to feel rough, patchy and dry, you need to start using hydrators. If your skin is extremely dry, opt for hyaluronic acid-enriched ampoules. They are best for treating dehydrated skin.

Those with normal to oily skin types can invest in moisturisers. Since moisturisers lock in moisture they are perfect if you want to brighten dull skin and make it look soft and plump. Of course, the type of moisturiser you choose also makes a big difference. Those with oily or acne-prone skin need to opt for gel-based moisturisers as they are lightweight while those with normal skin can use cream-based moisturisers.

Whichever you choose, remember it’s best to go for a product that is fragrance & colour-free, and hypoallergenic. This will reduce the risk of allergies and make it perfect for people with sensitive skin too.
