Weddings in India are more than just events—they’re grand celebrations, often treated with more importance than even education. No, no, honestly! According to a report released in June 2024, people in India spend nearly double the amount on weddings as they do on education, from preschool through graduation, averaging around ₹12.5 lakh per wedding. Furthermore, the Indian wedding industry was valued at a staggering $130 billion (₹10.7 lakh crore), standing as the second-largest industry in our country.
Now that I’ve laid the foundation for you, here’s the latest buzz. A study by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) projects that the upcoming wedding season, from November to December, will see a whopping 48 lakh weddings—up from 2023 which saw 35 lakh weddings. What’s even more jaw-dropping is the expected expenditure: an enormous ₹4.25 lakh crore.
Delhi, as always, will be a key player, with 4.5 lakh weddings anticipated, contributing ₹1.5 lakh crore to the total business. Additionally, wedding budgets are expected to range anywhere from ₹3 lakh to ₹1 crore, depending on the scale.
If you are getting married or know someone who is planning to tie the know, here’s a little info for you. The wedding season will begin from November 12 with Dev Uthani Ekadashi marking the start of the season. This will run up to December 16. Now the reason we’ll be witnessing this increased expenditure and number of weddings is because of the extended shaadi season as compared to previous years.
If you’re tying the knot soon, you’re part of this massive economic wave. Whether it’s a modest affair or a million-rupee extravaganza, one thing’s clear: no matter the times, weddings in India remain grand, lavish celebrations.
