7 Tips To Make Sure Humidity Doesn’t Cram Your (Hair) Style This Season!

We live in a land where it is always hot and mostly humid. While Mumbai ki baarish keeps things cool, the humidity now and all year round does a number on my skin and hair. I usually steer clear of wearing makeup in the summer and even if I do I have a few tricks up my sleeve. But you can’t really opt out of wearing your hair, can you? (I know it was an awful one! I spent a whole day with my Dad for Father’s Day, it’s going to take a while before the dad jokes leave my system.) Anyway, humidity is that one evil that messes with every hair type, from curly to straight, frizzy to soft, thick to thin – you know what I am getting at.

Now that the ‘height of humidity’ season has commenced, let’s accumulate a puddle of tips and tricks that you can use to not let humidity ruin your hair.

1. Keep it light

This logic goes for your face and hair. Humidity is known to settle on your roots making your hair damp and your roots greasy. If you add more products to that mixture, you’re never going to be able to get rid of the grease. A clarifying shampoo, light conditioner and serum are your best bet to keep it light this season.

2. Style it right

If you are heat styling your hair in this season then your pre and post hair care needs to be stellar. Ensure your hair is absolutely dry and your roots are devoid of moisture before you start heat styling. Start with prepping your hair with a heat protectant spray and finish with an anti-humidity/frizz free sealing hair cream.

3. Wear it up

If you can help it, wear your hair up as much as you can. An amazing braid or a pretty top knot is your best bet. These work even if you want to step out with wet hair. Just add some anti-frizz serum while your hair is still wet and style it in a braided updo or a top knot.

4. Oil for thick hair

Hair types differ, which means their treatment and reactions differ. If you have thick hair, then oil or shea butter based products are your best bet to tame the frizz. Keeping it light with a water or gel based serum wouldn’t work here because your hair wouldn’t be able to absorb it.

5. Celebrate your natural texture

When it comes to dealing with humidity, you can beat it at its own game by amping up your natural texture. If you have curls invest in some curl enhancing cream and get a diffuser part for your blow drier. If you have wavy hair, get some texturising or sea salt spray and rock beachy waves. Whatever your hair, just work with it.

6. Maybe get a haircut

If your hair falls flat a lot especially when it is humid outside, then you should consider the weight factor. Get some nice layers in your hair and invest in a good volumising shampoo. Also, do not overwash your hair, instead get a dry shampoo to elongate the in-between time.

7. Find your go-to hairstyles

Find some holy grail hairstyles and hair accessories that are your ride or die through the humidity. Buns and braids are a definite go-to for me. And I love cute bandanas and bow headbands the days that I’m not styling my hair.

8. Make most of a hair treatment

If your frizz is really out of control then maybe you could look at getting a keratin treatment for added hair health.
