Vitamin C Products VS Taking Vitamin Supplements

Covid-19 has been around for more than a year now, and I can’t seem to erase those memories when the virus first made its way to India. It wasn’t safe to step out, grocery items were perpetually sold out at supermarkets, wearing face masks became the norm, hand sanitisers and toilet paper became more precious than gold- 2020 felt like the apocalypse!

Here in Mumbai, we were only allowed to step out for two things- groceries and medicines. During my short trips to the chemist, I noticed that three items would always be in high demand- hand sanitisers, antiseptic disinfectants, and Vitamin C supplements. Speaking of the latter, according to the data by a research firm, Indians purchased around 185 crore pills of Vitamin C supplements last year.

Why Was There A Growing Demand For Vitamin C Supplements?

For starters, Vitamin C is known to build immunity against Covid-19. This water-soluble vitamin also grows, develops, and repairs body tissues. It helps in lowering blood pressure and helps the body to absorb iron. Since the body cannot store or produce Vitamin C, we must get our daily dose through supplements, vegetables, and fruits.

An adult needs about 65-90 milligrams of Vitamin C every day. I personally like to crush a Celin 500 tablet and add it to my smoothies and fruit juices. It makes me feel healthy and active during the day.

I have also heard that Vitamin C supplements help to improve the skin’s texture. To confirm whether a Vitamin C supplement is better than a topically applying a Vitamin C product, I reached out to Dr. Chytra Anand, Founder of SkinQ Beauty and here’s her take on the subject.

Which Is Better- Using Vitamin C Products Or Taking Vitamin Supplements?

Dr. Chytra Anand said, “Depends on what you are trying to achieve. Topically applying Vitamin C products helps to fade hyperpigmentation, reduce skin inflammation, and is photoprotective. Consuming Vitamin C works, on the other hand, works as an antioxidant to boost skin protection against free radicals. Vitamin C supplements are also an adjuvant to glutathione, and help in the uptake of nutrients in the body.”

Note: For Vitamin C to work its magic, the concentration levels should be anywhere between 10-20%. Anything higher than 20% could lead to burning and skin inflammation.

If you want to take some time off and at the same time give your skin a boost of Vitamin C, we suggest that you try out the MyGlamm K.Play Mandarin Brightening Sheet Mask. It improves the skin’s elasticity, is enriched with mandarin and white truffle, and is free from parabens, benzophenone, and artificial colourants. The best part is that it’s biodegradable too!

So, to answer the question- both Vitamin C supplements and products are effective and unique in their way. It depends on what purpose and concern you’re looking to tackle.

So, ready for happy and healthy skin?
