They say it’s easier for women now, and to an extent, I agree. We are getting more opportunities, being taken seriously, and are no longer viewed merely as caretakers. Yes, we’ve made significant progress—but it turns out we’re not quite there yet. Recently, a London-based Indian marketing professional shared on X how an HR representative from an Indian company asked her if she was planning to marry soon and we don’t know how to react.
Janhavi Jain writes that first when they asked how old she was and when she said 25, they instantly asked if she was planning to marry soon. She wrote, “This HR of an Indian company asked me how old I am and when I said 25, they asked me if I am looking to marry soon? Is this still happening?”
Soon after, people flooded her comment section with their personal opinions.
The other day, I was shocked to learn that a friend of mine lost a job opportunity simply because he was about to get married. The position was in a different city, and the company doubted whether her spouse would be willing to relocate. While I understand the hiring committee’s concern, it’s heartbreaking to see this growing trend where organizations expect individuals, regardless of gender, to sacrifice their happiness just to meet the company’s goals. This mindset is truly alarming and disheartening and adds to the debate on the toxic work culture.
