The thing with celebrities is that, apart from their primary job of acting, they’re often expected to carry some level of moral responsibility in their actions and words. However, there are times when their statements make us go, ummm, maybe silence would’ve been better. Recently, I had one of those moments when I heard something Tina Ahuja, Govinda’s daughter, said about periods.
In a podcast, Tina expressed her belief that period cramps are not real and only happen to women from Delhi and Mumbai. Yes, you read that right. According to her, period pain is “all psychological,” and most women in small towns supposedly don’t experience it. She said, ” I have stayed most of the time in Chandigarh, and I have heard only these girls from Bombay speak about cramps. Half of the problem comes from setting up these circles who are talking about the problem, and sometimes the ones who don’t get cramps also start to feel it psychologically. So many women in Punjab and other small cities don’t even realise when they undergo menopause.”
Don’t believe us? Here, take a look at the whole conversation.
While I personally don’t experience severe period cramps, I am surrounded by women who go through hellish periods. Some come from so-called “small towns,” while others grew up in “big cities.” The one thing they all have in common? They bleed and experience periods that can be equally challenging.
That’s why it baffles me to hear a woman dismissing symptoms experienced by so many others. Sure, I agree that a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits can help to an extent. But let’s be real—sometimes those shark weeks feel like absolute hell. And when these cramps and symptoms are not only real but medically backed, it’s shocking to see women dismiss the lived experiences of others.
