The more I watch my favourite Bollywood movies, the more I start checking out each of the looks the actresses carry with utmost grace and poise. The accessory? Perfection. The outfit? Straight from Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother’s wand (or maybe it was Manish Malhotra). Cut to me trying the same look for my cousin’s wedding, looking like the Cinderella before the Godmother made her appearance. Not a pleasant sight! Next time, I was well prepared with a checklist of what I wanted to buy for the next wedding in my family and there was one statement item that topped my list… maang tikka!
Be it Karishma Kapoor in Hum Saath Saath Hai, Deepika Padukone in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani or Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhania, the maang tikka has stayed. It’s the only accessory that never made a comeback because it never took time off like all the other accessories. Well done, you!
The Forehead Cover-Up
Though Bebo’s outfit was beautiful, we couldn’t get our eyes off her single accessory – the maang tikka on her forehead. It definitely beat Kareena as a showstopper. No hard feelings there, Poo but the pearl-encrusted accessory is the winner! You can go all out and pair it with an even heavier outfit if you want the ‘bride feels’ or team it up with an all-white or pastel outfit.

The Ethnic Racer
After watching Bajirao Mastani, I was in awe of Deepika’s acting skills but every time I tried thinking about the movie, I could only think of her jewellery and expressions from the song ‘Mohe Rang Do Lal‘. The kundan stone OD’d with pearls drops is perfect if your outfit is OTT. If your outfit is as simple and stunning as this accessory, you might just steal the show with your outstanding skills of match-making.

Flower Power
TBH, I never understood the idea of wearing floral jewellery on a mehendi function. I couldn’t help but wonder why we should give the gorgeous jewels a break with some flowers? I mean, WHY? Alia Bhatt heard me and answered my prayers in Two States. The floral kundan mang tikka went perfectly with her bridal outfit. This makes for the ideal look if you’re the bride and don’t want to wear flowers, EVER! After all, a girl can never own too many jewels and flowers don’t belong to the jewellery box…

The Peek-A-Boo Jewel
If you’re just getting into the ethnic zone but want to experiment with your jewellery, a small maang tikka with sleek hair makes for the perfect combination. No, they don’t always have to be gold, kundan or and pearly. Give that a ditch and try some diamonds in a vintage design; rose cut stones set in white gold? That’s what sparkling dreams are made of! At least the ones that include ethnic wear.
