Kissing scenes and Bollywood movies have somewhat of a complicated relationship. For the longest time, hand gestures, thunderstorm or flower rubbing was used as a symbol of kissing. Most of us thought that old Bollywood films have no space for smooches and lip locks. But do you know the record for the longest kissing scene was set in 1933?
Even before India’s independence, Bollywood already had a kissing scene in a film called Karma! The film featured real-life couple Devika Rani and Himanshu Rai in the lead role. The length of the kissing scene was reported to be around four minutes. Scroll down for a glimpse of the iconic kissing scene:
Back in the 1930s, Bollywood films were primarily made for British audiences and Karma was no different. It was directed by J.L. Freer Hunt and was a joint production between India, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Karma was full of cliche about India, like cobra hunting, snake charmers, magic and more. But the biggest talking point about the film was Devika and Himanshu’s kissing scene. It was the first Indian film to feature a kissing scene. Karma was released later in Hindi as Naagan Ki Raagini, but it made no impression on the Indian audience.
It is hard to believe that the longest kissing scene in Bollywood happened in 1933! Iconic, isn’t it?
