7 Period Problems You Should Definitely NOT Ignore!

Periods are a difficult time of the month. The cramps, continuous bleeding and Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS) are all a little too much to take all at once. But then, these are a part of your monthly cycle. However, there are a few things that may seem normal but really aren’t. Here are 7 symptoms and things to not ignore during your period. Take note, girls!

1. Having Extended Periods

Most women tend to ignore heavy bleeding. But heavy bleeding, along with a period that stretches beyond 7-8 days, is a red flag. It may indicate fibroid growth. A fibroid is a non-cancerous, fibrous growth around the uterus. So it is very important to be mindful of the duration of your period.

2. Suffering From Excessive Pain

Pain in the abdomen and cramps are common during your periods because your uterine wall is shedding itself. However, excessive and unbearable pain could be a sign of endometriosis. Endometriosis is a disorder in which the uterine tissue starts growing outside the uterus. When this uterine tissue breaks, along with rest of the uterine wall during your period, this blood and tissue has no way to escape. So over time, it causes swelling and lesions which are very painful.

3. Irregular Periods

Irregular periods are usually an indication of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), if they’re accompanied by facial hair, weight gain, hair loss and acne. It is a hormonal disorder in which cysts are formed around the ovaries due to excessive production of testosterone in the body. This can be treated with medicines and diet changes but a consultation with the doctor is important!

4. Presence Of Large Blood Clots

Most women tend to think large blood clots during periods are normal. Well, they aren’t. While small clots are normal, larger blood clots can again be a symptom of fibrosis. These clots also may get stuck inside the uterine opening causing clogs and other serious illnesses.

5. Suddenly Skipping A Period

To have regular periods or to be able to conceive, a woman must have a BMI of at least 22. Low body fat puts the body in a state of ‘emergency’ and causes it to focus on only the life-sustaining activities. This may cause your ovaries to not release the eggs eventually leading to missed periods. This is also the reason why you miss your period after you start working out intensively.

6. When PMS Becomes Serious Business

Most women have some or the other symptoms of their period like cramps, acne, tender breasts, bloating or mood swings. Together, these symptoms are known as PMS. However, there is a severe form of PMS known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder which affects about 5% of the women. It makes periods extremely painful and needs medical attention to be dealt with.

7. Period Abnormalities

A lot of period abnormalities can be a huge indicator of thyroid problems. Whether you have missed periods or heavy flow, they’re all possibly symptoms of thyroid disorder. Thyroid issues can also delay your periods or cause an early onset. You must always get your thyroid checked in case of period irregularities.
