I remember the first time I fell in love. It was the most beautiful and effortless feeling in the world. And so after making a few rookie mistakes, I realised that taking that serious plunge is a different ball game. You should never take it unless you’re absolutely ready because there are two people playing the field here. So, if you’ve just taken that big step of getting into a serious relationship—congratulations to you! And now, a few tips that will totally help you get things right.
1. You have to learn to let go of whatever existed in your past
First things first, you have to learn to let go of your past. Not just yours, his too. To start something real, it’s important to forget what you had. Good or bad. This is the first step in taking things up a level and keeping them good.
2. Make sure you know him really well
Sometimes, when you’re just casually dating, you tend to ignore certain things about a person. But when you get into a serious relationship, it’s important to make sure that you know them really well because even tiny deets matter when things are serious and real. You definitely don’t need (unpleasant) surprises!
3. Stop making unreal comparisons
“X does this; Y says this.” If you walk down this road, you’re setting yourself up for a let-down. A comparison to a third person will just ruin things that are budding between the two of you. Appreciate him for who he is and things will sail perfectly. You are one team now!
4. Fights are not a bad thing if they’re leading to healthy discussions
The key to a good relationship is to have disagreements and fights because you’re communicating with each other and bringing out issues from under the carpet. That way, you know what the other person wants. As long as there is some form of learning with the fights you’ve had, it’s absolutely healthy!
5. There will be dry spells and it’s okay
Not everytime are you going to have mind-blowing sex in your life. Every couple goes through a dry spell and it’s a phase. There is nothing to freak out about. Know that it’s not permanent and that, it happens to the best of us.
6. You will have to make a few adjustments
Don’t like something about his friends? Or don’t like something that he does? Well, maybe he has some of these emotions, too. This is when you learn to let some things go because another key to a good relationship is to adjust to a lot in life.
It’s a start of something awesome. Embrace it.
