6 Thin-Hair Mistakes That Could Be Making Your Hair Look Thinner

Raise a hand if you’ve dealt with a lifetime of stuck-to-your-forehead bangs or limp waves. Same, pal, same. Thin hair is super tricky to deal with. Haircare is not one-size-fits-all. So the volumising shampoo that gives your BFF those bombshell-level, voluminous hair might not be the one for you. If you are scouting for hacks and products to make your hair look fuller, it’s best to experiment with different things to see what works for your unique hair type.

That being said, there are a couple of hair practices that are surefire ways of creating the illusion of thicker, bouncier hair. To help our thin-haired crew flaunt the look of a thick hairdo, we’re listing down common thin-hair mistakes along with the secrets to building volume and texture.

6 Common Thin Hair Mistakes You Need To Avoid

Mistake #1: Using The Wrong Shampoo And Conditioner

PSA: Your current haircare arsenal might be weighing down your hair. This means it’s time to switch your current shampoo, conditioner, or mask for something that suits your specific hair type. Hair masks and conditioners designed to combat frizz and flyaways are loaded with heavy ingredients that coat the hair and weigh them down. When buying your next hair product, look out for words like volumising and clarifying to find your match.

Mistake #2: Using The Wrong Technique To Blow-Dry

The way you blow-dry can also make or break your fine hair. While blow-drying your hair, a rule of thumb is to apply a good lightweight mousse to build some volume. You can use a comb to apply the product through the lengths. Alternatively, using your finger as a comb and pulling it all the way through will also do the trick. In addition to that, using a round brush near the roots and lifting the roots when drying can give your hair some much-needed lift and volume. Root lift can also be achieved by using velcro rollers. Make sure to blow dry the roots on the opposite side of their growth to add volume to your crown.

Mistake #3: Back Brushing

Back-brushing used to be our go-to technique to get a temporary lift. The technique, however, can be quite damaging in the long run. Back-brushing causes stress on hair by disrupting the cuticle and causing breakage. This makes fine hair look ever finer. Instead, opt for volumizing products that give your hair a volumising effect. A texturing spray or thickening cream will do the trick.

Mistake #4: Brushing Hair When It’s Wet

Combing wet hair is not only painful, but it can wreak havoc on our hair. This practice can tug our hair and cause breakage too. Fine hair is brittle and can be very tangled at times which can cause breakage.

Mistake #5: Opting For Global Hair Colour

Thin hair can look thinner when you have all-over hair colour. It’s best to strategically place your hair colours. Colouring styles like balayage and highlights create contrast in the hair. This gives an illusion of a thick and voluminous mane. If you want to take your hair game up a notch and make it look thicker, opting for an underlayer hair colour will do the trick. If your hair is in a healthy state, having a few lightened streaks will actually make it look fuller.

Mistake #6: Styling Your Hair Straight

For straight-hair-loving folks: Straight hair can make your locks looks thinner. Wearing your hair straight lets your scalp’s natural oil show and flow more quickly. If you have wavy or curly hair, use methods and products that help enhance your natural hair texture. Try using a curling wand to get some bends and kinks in your hair. For extra lift, switch your hair into a side parting and go an inch further than you normally would and enjoy that glamorous volume.
