Thousands of songs in 18 different languages, countless awards and honours and millions of fans across the globe—the life of the late singer Lata Mangeshkar was legendary, to say the least. She redefined how the Indian music industry worked, lived life on her own terms and inspired artists all over the world by just being herself.

Lata Mangeshkar’s journey into the world of music is every bit fascinating and over the years many filmmakers have wished to make a biopic on her life. In fact, people approached Lataji with different ideas for a biopic, show, and even a web series based on her life, but she always turned them down.

A source close to the singer revealed the reason for it and said, “In the last few years, a lot of people wanted to make a biopic on Lata Mangeshkar, but she refused. She wasn’t keen on sharing anecdotes from her personal life.”

Lata Mangeshkar was one of the five kids born to a popular Marathi theatre Dinanath Mangeshkar. Her father recognised her talent quite early and started training her in Indian classical music when she was 5. She was just 13 when she lost her father and she had to start working to earn a living. Her initial years in the film industry were full of struggles but nevertheless, she persisted!

In her last interview, Lata didi was asked about her legacy and she had a bittersweet take on it. The singer shared, “Nowadays, young people’s attention span is very limited. They do not live in the past at all. It is the era of instant gratification. Everyone wants to live for the moment. I doubt my legacy will mean as much to future generations.”

Lata Mangeshkar added, “No one is indispensable. Many luminaries far more gifted than me scientists, religious and political leaders, doctors, and engineers have come and gone. The world lives on.”

While we would have loved to see Lata Mangeshkar’s journey on the silver screen, we hope filmmakers respect her wishes. Biopic or no biopic, India’s nightingale will always remain in our hearts!
