What Is Retro Style?

First applied with respect to clothing in the ’70s and coined by London designers, the term retro refers to styles that draw inspiration from earlier periods of time. By definition, a retro style brings back the best of those decades, allowing us to relive classics and all the former trends through our clothing. Think women with coiffed hair, pleated midi skirts, mini skirts and headbands that were popular in the rock n roll age in western culture. Closer home, you may wish to refer to yesteryear actresses; Dimple Kapadia in Bobby, Mumtaaz in Brahmachaari, and more. If we take a look at Bollywood movies in recent times, Deepika Padukone’s homage to a number of heroines in Om Shanti Om, Priyanka Chopra’s take on retro fashion in Dil Dhadakne Do, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s entire wardrobe in Action Replayy and Sonakshi Sinha’s dainty look in Lootera are perfect examples. Take a look in detail at the bollywood retro style looks in Bollywood movies that caught our collective eyes.

Retro Looks In Bollywood Movies

Let’s face it: when it comes to the movies, we are all Bollywood fanatics and there is just no stopping us. However, it’s not just the fun and drama of the cinema that we love. When it comes to loving Bollywood, clothes too, form an integral part, giving us some much-needed inspiration at times. Looking up retro looks in current B-wood movies, the examples are many; there is a very chic looking PeeCee who channels some memorable Bollywood retro looks in Dil Dhadakne Do; a subtly dressed Sonakshi Sinha with an on-point look in Lootera, and of course, the glamorous Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om. With their fashion quotient and retro bollywood look, these leading ladies provide some major retro fashion inspiration, while in character.

Priyanka Chopra In Dil Dhadakne Do

Channelling the late ’60s and the ’70s was Priyanka Chopra, seen in a yellow mini dress in Dil Dhadakne Do. This particular style of dressing saw much fanfare in the Swinging Sixties, and the Seventies, as women in western fashion gave way to modish appearances. Short hair, a love for the emerging rock n roll culture and of course, the mini skirts and the mini dresses found their place in every young girl’s wardrobe. A perfect pick to be worn in today’s time, you can wear this look as you step out into the night with friends.

Deepika Padukone In Om Shanti Om

Om Shanti Om may have been the perfect launch vehicle for a wide-eyed Deepika Padukone, but more than that, it was a showcase of past retro looks from yesteryear Bollywood. Portraying looks of famous past heroines, Deepika Padukone donned some memorable retro fashion looks in the movie. The best of them all, perhaps, was the introductory scene where she wore a bright pink number. This was one of the most memorable Bollywood retro looks.
Whilst it may not translate into a daily wear option, you can take a leaf out of Deepika Padukone’s look book and opt for a similar colour to wear to a wedding.

Anushka Sharma In Bombay Velvet

Everything from the embroidery to the silhouette spoke of the bygone era, and honestly, we couldn’t have been happier. The sheath dresses, the jewels and the flapper vibes flaunted by Anushka Sharma in Bombay Velvet are enough to inspire you, and whether you believe it or not, it’s possible to single out elements and style them your way. Dresses, hair clips, or heels—wear what you wish, your way.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan In Action Replayy

Another find in terms of retro fashion looks is Aishwarya Rai’s Action Replayy character who wears everything from flared bell-bottoms to polka dot blouses with fashionable flair. Whether you need some fashion inspiration to step out to go to college or for a girls’ day out, here’s where you will find a lot of retro fashion looks.

Sonakshi Sinha In Lootera

We have said it before and we will say it again—Sonakshi Sinha donned some dainty sarees in Lootera, keeping it subtle and yet at enough to draw some inspiration. Saree style aside, the actress was also seen wearing some remarkable jewellery that was apt for the post-partition, 1953 Bengal in which the movie was set. Note the simplicity of the saree drape, the collared blouse and the minimal jewellery, something you may incorporate in your workwear attire. Sonakshi Sinha definitely gives the best Bollywood retro look in saree.

Retro Hairstyles

As is with retro fashion, retro hairstyles too can be big lifesavers when it comes to dressing for theme-parties or just taking your look up by a notch. Take a look at the leading Bollywood ladies whose movie hairstyles gave us some legit inspiration.
