Trailblazing actor Ayushmann Khurrana is all set to take over the big screens tomorrow with the much anticipated Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. A sequel to the well-acclaimed, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, the film explores the dynamics of same-sex love in Ayushmann’s trademark slapstick comic genre.
“Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is an out and out entertainer that also gives the right message. It will be incorrect to call this film a serious, message-oriented film. It is not. It is a hilarious film that’s also slapstick in parts to drive home the message of the film. It has its heart at the right place and it is not a serious film that delves any deeper,” Ayushmann said in a recent media statement on the film.
A light-hearted story as it might be, the film appears all set to become another one of sleeper hits that Ayushmann is hailed for in the industry. With actors like Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, and Gajraj Rao, we expect nothing less from the film anyway. Just like most of his films, this one also remains crucial for its subject matter. And while we’d love to watch a serious take on the subject being translated on the silver screen, this one fits the bill equally well. Let’s call this one a romcom for all that it matters and why not, #LoveIsLove after all. Ayushmann’s wife, Tahira Kashyap, seems to second that.
In fact, she recently commented on Ayushmann’s much-talked-about kiss with Jitendra in the film and we are really impressed with what the filmmaker had to say. “I was delighted to see Ayushmann kissing a guy on screen! Honestly, now I view it from the perspective of respecting an artist and his work – so whether he kisses a man or woman, I am seeing the emotion of the character. When he kisses a girl, I can see that the man is in love with her and this is what he needs to do to show love. I would make my characters in my movies do the same. And now if he is kissing a man that’s the most natural thing for him to do because he is gay and that’s his way of expressing love,” said Tahira in a media interview recently.
She further added, “Who am I to judge? My perspective of watching him on screen is surely from the perspective of what he as a character should be doing and in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan this is what he should do because he is in love with the boy. What else do you do when you are in love?”
Honestly, it’s rather rare to watch same-sex love stories being treated with the kind of earnestness and conviction that they truly deserve in the Hindi film industry. And while a lot of it has to do with the makers, the onus also lies on the audience and how accepting it tends to be. Well, let us all borrow a little from Tahira’s ideology, make it to the cinema with an open heart tomorrow and see what the film has in store for us.
