Taapsee Pannu Says This Is The Real Reason Why The Pay Gap Exists In Bollywood & She’s Got A Point
Taapsee Pannu is no stranger to success and has had a string of fabulous hits to highlight her career. From Thappad to Manmarziyaan, the actress has been part of films that have not only won critical acclaim but even fared well in the box office. However, while her movies have garnered love and a loyal fan base, she, like several other actresses in Bollywood, has not been able to break away from the inequality regarding the pay gap.
Talking to a media portal, Taapsee got candid about the stark difference in fee compared to her male counterparts. But she said the industry is not to be blamed. “Pay parity is not about producers not wanting to give money. So, stop blaming the industry only for this problem. It starts from the level where there are not many footfalls when it comes to female-driven films. When it comes to a female-driven film, people wait for reviews more than advance bookings. When it comes to a male-driven film, the advance bookings are so high that the footfalls are collected within the first weekend itself, i.e. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday,” she remarked. Wow, we had no idea that the industry worked that way! Kudos to Taapsee for giving us a much-need insight.
She added, “For a female-driven film, we have to wait for a Monday because by then, there is ample word of mouth and reviews which give us a brief idea about the film. We have to undergo the review test whereas many male-driven films end up opening big without any of these. So audiences too will have to contribute to this change, that’s when we can bring about the change we desire to see.” NGL, we totally agree with Taapsee and believe as an audience we need to support female-led films if we want to see a change in remuneration gap in the industry.
The actress is now working on several projects, including Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming flick Dobaaraa, which is a Hindi adaption of Oriol Paulo’s 2018 Spanish-language film Mirage. She will also be in Shabaash Mithu, a film directed by Srijit Mukherjee.
And if you ask us, we love how candid Taapsee was about the pay parity debate! We are rooting for her success and would love to see a real change in the pay gap.
