It has been 13 days since Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide and the world lost a bright star. While we are still coping with the loss of such a kind and talented soul, his family has decided to honour the late actor. In a statement released by Sushant’s family, they revealed that they will set up a foundation in his name called Sushant Singh Rajput Foundation (SSRF) to support young talent in the fields of cinema, science and sports–everything he was passionate about.
This is what the statement said:
Remembering him fondly, his family said that while he might be ‘Sushant’ to the world, he was simply ‘Gulshan’ to them. They recalled how he was always smiling and was ever-curious about the wonders of science. The statement added that his sparkling eyes and infectious smile will forever be missed.
They also revealed that his childhood home in Patna will be converted into a memorial which will have his favourite books, some personal belongings, a fight-simulator, and this most prized possession–his telescope, on display. They thanked his loyal fans for showing them so much love and support during these trying times and wrote, “We once again, thank you all for the thoughts and prayers.”
Sushant’s sudden and tragic demise has re-opened a conversation about nepotism and the treatment of outsiders in Bollywood. Several industry insiders called out the hypocrisy of Bollywood’s elite for alienating Sushant while he was alive, and later posting ‘tributes’ on social media after his death.
In fact, some citizens have even gone as far as filing police complaints against Bollywood biggies like Karan Johar and Ekta Kapor. The netizens are not having it and hashtags like #NepotismInBollywood, #BoycottKaranJoharMovie, #BoycottBollywood, #SupportSelfMade, among others had become trending topics on Twitter–which led to celebs like Sonakshi Sinha leaving the social media platform for good!
However, it’s best if the speculation and investigation are left to the police. If we truly want to honour Sushant’s memory, let’s do it by normalising the topic of mental health in India. Sushant would probably not have approved of the harassment of bullying of other people on his behalf.
We hope you are at peace, Sushant. Your family misses their Gulshan and so do we.
