Falling in love, falling out of love, not being in love… All of it is just a part of life. Being single, however long you choose to, is certainly not the end of the world. Women need to positively reinforce themselves with the confidence of choosing singledom over an unhappy relationship. Until the great love of our life beckons, here are 10 stereotypes single women are tired of hearing.
1. ‘Was that the fourth guy you broke up with?’
Girls, please for once, be selfish. Don’t be in a relationship just for the sake of putting up a brave face in front of friends and family. The number of guys you date is inconsequential, you should just be open to new and positive experiences – the demise of a relationship doesn’t make you a failure.
2. ‘Don’t you get lonely?’
As a matter of fact, even people in relationships get lonely, so just don’t pay heed to such unintelligent remarks.
3. ‘Maybe just lose some weight?’
It is funny how some people can attribute the lack of a love life to, ‘Oh you are fat, so no guy likes you’. Which woman would ever want to be liked by anyone who body shames them anyway? Lose weight, gain weight, apply makeup or step out without even applying your signature eyeliner flick – do it because you want it and not so that a guy can like you.
4. ‘You are trying too hard’
There is nothing wrong in assertively chasing your life goals – if being in a committed relationship is one of them, so be it. The whole nonsensical trope of ‘love will come for you when you least expect it’ is for the lazy and half-hearted, if you like someone, just go and tell them that you do.
5. ‘So what do you do on the weekends?’
Being single doesn’t mean that you don’t have friends and a number of interests that keep you pretty occupied during the weekend. And even committed folks need to throw their feet up once in awhile and get a detox from each other while doing absolutely nothing.
6. ‘You need to lower your standards’
Absolutely not. That’s the one thing you should never do. If you are well aware of the love, compassion and respect you can bring to a relationship, you certainly don’t have to settle for anything else.
7. ‘You are still single, when will you get married?’
If every girl had a penny for the gazillion times she’s been asked this question, we’d all be so so rich. So, what’s the answer to this question? Well, when you bloody well want to.
8. ‘Are you still not over your ex?’
Even when hounded with this extremely insensitive question, you need to be patient and kind to yourself. Don’t jump from one thing to another because it helps you forget your past for the time being.
9. ‘Why are you still single?’
As if, you’d actually know the answer to this ambiguous-as-heck question.
10. ‘Start a new hobby, it’ll help you meet more people’
You don’t have to put yourself out there if you don’t want to. So, at this juncture, politely thank the other person for their overwhelming interest in your life, and tell them to mind their own business. Please and thank you.
