The modern dating scene is becoming increasingly complex, thanks to the ever-evolving dating slangs popularized by Gen Z. From “situationship” to “ghosting,” these terms have reshaped how relationships are understood today. Now, there’s a new addition to the list: sledging—a trend that’s catching the attention of Gen Z.

What is sledging?

Sledging refers to intentionally dragging out a relationship through the winter season to delay a breakup. Why? Simply to avoid being single during the coldest months.

This phenomenon is most common among 18 to 25-year-olds, who reportedly continue dating people they aren’t genuinely interested in or postpone ending the relationship to enjoy companionship and festive vibes during the winter.

A recent study conducted by a dating app revealed surprising statistics:

• Over 15% of single Gen Z individuals admitted to staying in a relationship through Christmas, despite knowing they wanted to end things.

• Another 15% said they delayed breaking up with their partner until after New Year, even if the relationship had been over in their minds for a while.

• As many as 75% of participants confessed to deciding on a breakup in November but postponing it to avoid being alone during the holiday season.

• Shockingly, 25% had already decided to end their relationship as early as August but still chose to sledge their partner through the winter months.

The Reason Behind “Sledging”

Well, the main reason behind “sledging” during the winter season as revealed by the majority of sledgers is that they wanted a companion to cuddle with in the winter. A large number also admitted that they wanted a partner with whom they could have sex. Additionally, a few claimed they wanted to avoid feeling lonely.

It seems like “cuffing season” is being taken to a whole new level, with people taking it quite literally. If you’re engaging in this trend or find yourself on the receiving end, well, now you have a word for it: sledging.

However, the morality of this practice is certainly questionable. Is it truly fair to either person involved? While it might temporarily ward off loneliness, it ultimately extends dishonesty and emotional discomfort for both parties.
