Kudos to the Indian Matchmaking makers for always dropping fresh seasons on Fridays. After all, it makes for the perfect weekend cringe binge! As one can tell, I just finished watching season three of the hit (and controversial) reality show and it was EVERYTHING I expected it to be—entertaining, problematic, and infuriating. Now that’s a rare mix and you can trust Sima Taparia always to get the recipe right!
But did you know that Sima Aunty almost quit matchmaking? Yes, India’s top matchmaker recently opened up about the same on Cyrus Broacha’s podcast. Sima spoke about how she started matchmaking almost two decades ago in 2005 and it hasn’t been all rosy and smooth!
There was a time when the matchmaking business wasn’t working out for her, leaving Sima dejected. Beech mein, ek do baar I was a little bit depressed, I said mujhe band karna hai yeh kaam (There was a phase where I decided to quit, I was depressed).” She further added, “I thought kahin success nahi ho raha hai, but nothing is in my hand. Jahan likha hota hai wahin it happens, I cannot tell ki sabka match kara dungi (I thought I wasn’t doing a good job, but it’s all destiny), it cannot happen.”
However, Sima’s husband encouraged her to continue working as a matchmaker. “Anup said, ‘You have all these qualities, you have to continue’. I again started it when he pushed,” she shared. Well, that’s a lovely insight. I have a serious question though—why does Sima Aunty have a zero success rate even after the success of the show?
Sima Taparia’s Zero Success Rate!
Three whole seasons of Indian Matchmaking later Sima Taparia hasn’t been able to make even one wedding happen. Yes, in season one, she did manage to get Akshay Jakhete and Radhika Somani rokafied. However, the couple called it off soon. There haven’t been any updates about Akshay ever since. Then we saw a wedding in season two as Pradhyuman Maloo tied the knot with Ashima Chauhan.
There was a catch though. Pradyuman didn’t find Ashmia through Sima. They met at a party, clicked, and decided to take the plunge. As per latest reports and a Reddit thread, things are not particularly well between these two. Apparently, Ashima also talked about facing difficulties in 2022 (after the wedding) but later deleted the post.
In season two, we also saw Shital Patel meeting Niraj Mehta through her sister. They aren’t engaged but living together now. Viral Joshi and Aashay Shah met in the same season as well. They continue to date and we are yet to hear about an engagement!
In season three, we saw another engagement. But again, Sima had no role to play here. Miami-based Arti Lalwani got bored of the sub-par matches that the matchmaker suggested and decided to take matters into her hands by signing up on a dating website. She met Jamal there, fell in love, and the two got engaged!
That’s a score of 0/5 for Sima Aunty!
Will she be able to break the dry spell in season four (c’mon we all know there’s going to be one)?
