Five years ago, I would never have imagined that breastplates would take the fashion world by storm. Maybe I was naïve, but here we are. For the past year, I’ve watched countless celebrities champion this bold style, and just recently, Alia Bhatt made headlines at Paris Fashion Week. She stunned everyone by wearing a metal cast silver breastplate by Gaurav Gupta for the L’Oréal Paris – Le Defile show. It was gorgeous and so high fashion, I instantly wanted something similar for myself too. But breastplates are not exactly available everywhere and while some brands are creating similar stuff, it’s way too expensive.
My search landed me on Shweta Mahadik’s profile. The queen of DIY, she took up the challenge of creating a breastplate top inspired by Alia’s look! She started by cutting a black mannequin to create the bustier shape, then came in the molding material and silver spray paint. The result? It’s for you to see!
While Shweta’s creation is jaw-dropping, we can’t deny that Gaurav Gupta’s design was exceptional. Not only did Alia rock it, but Hollywood actress and singer Kelly Rowland also wore the same metallic bustier in gold, making a statement of her own. GG even shared a behind-the-scenes video of how Alia’s iconic bustier was made.
With the festive season upon us, it’ll be interesting to see if breastplates will make their way into wardrobes of us commoners or if there’s still time for the trend to catch on.
