Shah Rukh Khan Gets Emotional While Talking About His Elder Sister’s Mental Health

There’s no star like Shah Rukh Khan! He is witty, he is charming, and he knows how to treat people with utmost respect. But to reach where he is, SRK has seen his share of struggles including the heartbreaking loss of both his parents.

One of SRK’s old interviews is currently doing rounds on the internet where he talks about his parents’ untimely demise and how it affected his elder sister Shahnaz Lalarukh’s mental health. Their father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, passed away in 1981 while their mother, Lateef Fatima Khan passed away 10 years after that. Speaking about the toll it took on his sister, SRK shares, “I remember my sister standing in front of my father’s dead body. She just looked, she didn’t cry, she didn’t say anything she just fell and hit her head on the ground. For two years after that, she didn’t cry, she didn’t speak, she just kept looking in the space, it just changed her world. By God’s grace, she is better now.

In the same interview, SRK also revealed how the doctors once told him that his sister won’t survive. However, he didn’t lose hope and got her treated in Switzerland while he was shooting for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. He said, “During the making of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, she again was hospitalised and they (the doctors) said she will not survive. I took her to Switzerland, got her treated there while I was shooting Tujhe Dekha Toh Ye Jana Sanam. But she hadn’t ever recovered, from the loss of her father, the suddenness of him passing away. Then it got compounded with my mother passing away ten years later. So we are, what in Muslims is called, Yatim and Yasir, which means father and motherless.

He also shared how his sister is also highly qualified and has done MA LLB but the loss of parents completely shattered her mental health. “When I see her, especially the time period from my father’s death and mother’s death, she was highly qualified, had done MA LLB, very intelligent, like my parents wanted her to be. But she could not face the reality of losing her parents and I somehow, developed this sense of detachment, false bravado, which I show in public, a sense of humour, a lot of things which I do which people think is flamboyant and very Bollywood is to cover up.

SRK fought against all odds to save his sister and reports suggest that she continues to live with him at Mannat. He is truly a family man!
