November 26, 2019 marks 11 years of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Arguably the most ghastly attacks in modern Indian history, the attacks shook Mumbai to its core. Ten Lashkar-e-Tayyiba terrorists made their way into the financial capital of the country and gunned down over 160 people. Nine out of the ten terrorists were killed, one of them, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, was caught alive. He was imprisoned and finally executed in November 2012. Today, we salute the martyrs
The Heroes Who Laid Down Their Own Lives To Save Ours
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
Major Unnikrishnan was leading his team of NSG Commandos to the sixth floor of the Taj Hotel and was instrumental in rescuing 14 hostages. During the firing from either side, one of his teammates was seriously injured. He bravely extracted his colleague from the terrorists and was even shot in the arm. He continued to fight and followed the terrorists who had escaped to another floor. He was then shot from the back.
Hemant Karkare
Hemant Karkare was the Chief of Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad at the time and he died during the cross-firing between terrorists and Mumbai police at Rang Bhawan. The terrorist was later revealed to be Kasab. Another terrorist fired from his rifle and the bullet took Karkare’s life.
Vijay Salaskar
Vijay Salaskar was an encounter specialist in Mumbai Police. He had killed about 75 criminals during his tenure. He was in the car with Karkare when they ran into a terrorist who shot them.
Ashok Kamte
He was the additional commissioner of police and was with Salaskar and Karkare in the car. He was also shot during the crossfire. He was the only one who retaliated to the fire, but unfortunately, lost his life.
Today, many took to Twitter to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives during the attacks.
