Sabyasachi Designs School Uniforms For Girls In Rajasthan & The Pictures Have Our Hearts!

From wedding-goers to brides-to-be, Sabyasachi ranks high up in the list for those looking to make an entrance in Indian wear, his distinctive work marrying contemporary techniques and reverence to textiles preferred by one and all. But this time around, the ace designer’s latest project is different than all the rest we have seen from his ateliers so far.

School Uniforms For Girls By Sabyasachi

In perhaps a first for even him, the couturier has designed school uniforms for girls in Rajasthan. Continue reading for the details.

Championing Textiles: Uniforms Featuring Ajrakh

In association with Citta, a non-profit organisation founded by Michael Daube, the Sabyasachi-designed Ajrakh offerings will be worn by the girls at Ratnavati Girls School in Jaisalmer. The resist-dyeing block-printing technique is an age-old one, deriving its name from ‘azarak’ which stands for ‘blue’ in Persian. Often highlighting patterns in white and deep red, the precision-heavy textile uses natural indigo and madder dyes. Local to the Sindh region, the craft is practised in Kutch, Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan.

Designer’s Statement

Highlighting the craft in his work, Sabyasachi has created uniforms comprising kurtas featuring a white pattern against the blue backdrop, emphasised with a crimson stripe and teamed with cropped pants. Distinctive, beautiful and easy for the kids to wear, the uniform is a far cry from the usual, championing the craft beyond it all.

“When designing these outfits, I wanted to make sure they reflected the region’s craft heritage, with the hopes that it would highlight for the young girls the beauty and power inherent to the craft, as well as provide a better sense of community, connection and pride for their home,” read a part of his statement shared on Instagram. Take a look at the entirety of it below.

What’s more, is that the project involved working with the craftswomen from the area while aiding them with gainful employment. As the statement by the couturier elaborated, the idea was also to “give women in the region vocational skills and the opportunity for economic independence.” Slated to open doors in December this year, the school’s architecture is designed by Diana Kellogg, and it aims to provide education to girls from the underprivileged sections.
