Rookie Mistakes To Avoid While Trying A New Makeup Look

Have you ever attempted a new makeup look and thought that it just doesn’t work for you? Then you’ve probably messed up somewhere because makeup trends are meant for everyone and very rarely will you find those that are “unsuitable” for a person. Think about that time when you tried a neon eyeliner look or even a cream blush for the cold girl makeup look. Did you get discouraged when you thought the eye makeup wasn’t suiting you or the cream blush ruined your makeup base? It may not be the fault of the trend but rather minor mistakes that you may have made while applying it. To help you avoid makeup fails and give you a better chance at acing any look you set your eyes on, we have listed out some rookie mistakes that almost everyone is guilty of making. Check ’em out!

7 Mistakes To Avoid When Trying A New Makeup Look

Not Using Makeup Primer

Even if you get the most expensive foundation that promises smooth skin for long hours, it won’t deliver on that promise unless you use a makeup primer prior. Primers will smoothen your skin’s texture and make your foundation look like a filter. Makeup primers also prevent foundation and concealer formulas from clogging your pores, which is an important note to make if you have acne-prone skin.

Not Tightlining Your Water Lines

If you have used any kind of pigment on your lids, it will only complement your eyes if you tightline your lash lines with a kajal. The reason is, colourful neon liners and vibrant eyeshadows tend to cover your natural lash lines and you then lose that natural definition. Your eyes may appear more sunken even though the eye pigments are supposed to make your eyes pop. Make a habit of lining only your water lines with a black or brown kajal after you’ve applied any kind of eyeshadow or colourful eyeliner.

Skipping Mascara

Mascara can make or break your makeup look. No eye makeup is complete without this product. If you try a new eye makeup trend and forget to apply mascara, chances are you won’t like the results. Always, ALWAYS wear mascara, even on your lower lashes.

Beginning Contour From The Centre Of The Face

When applying contour products, do not begin from the centre of your face. Start from the outside of your face and move inwards. For example, when doing a cheekbone contour, start by drawing the line from your hairline and trace it beneath your cheekbones and then blend. This will give you a more natural and seamless chiselled effect.

Blending Cream Products Over Powder Products

If you want to experiment with cream blush or use a cream eyeshadow, make sure you are not applying it over a powder-based product. For cream blush, avoid using a setting powder to set your foundation and concealer first. Apply foundation, concealer, and cream blush, and then use the setting powder; this way the blush will not ruin your base. For eyeshadows, always use a cream or liquid eyeshadow first and then use powder over it. This will also make your eye makeup last much longer and look pigmented.

Not Cleaning Up Your Eye Makeup

Say you tried a smokey eye makeup trend and you look more like a panda rather than what you expected. That’s because you didn’t clean up your eye makeup look. It’s simple really. You don’t need to be super careful when creating the smokey eye trend, you can be messy. After you’ve laid down all the pigments, simply dip a Q-tip in micellar water and clean up above the crease, below your lower lash lines and on the outer corners.

Not Prepping With Lip Care

If you don’t use lip care before lipstick, your pout is going to get dry and chapped. If you have chapped skin on your lips, use a lip scrub and then use a lip balm. Perform lip care when you are doing your skincare routine. That way when it’s time to apply lipstick, you can dab off the excess balm and your lips will be smooth and well moisturised.

Do not ignore these mistakes. Correct them and you will always slay any makeup look you wish to rock.
