8 Ways Parents Can Positively Shape Their Child’s Personality

Becoming a parent is a journey of life-long responsibilities and is filled with pride, happiness, and emotions. While some days you may feel like you are acing this role, on others you may hit a few road bumps, which might make you question whether you are doing things right.

But as your child depends on you and looks up to you for guidance and support, you need to ensure that you are there for them, and give them the security and warmth to lead a healthy and happy life. This will also help you nurture your child and influence their overall growth and development in a positive way. To give you more insight, let’s take a look at some of the most important roles of parents in child development and tips to strengthen the parent-child relationship.

8 Different Role Of Parents In Child Development

Build The First Bonds Of Emotional Attachment

As parents, and your child’s primary caregivers, you are your little one’s first link to any emotional bonding and attachment. This means that your baby will learn their first emotions in relation to you. The way you bond with your munchkin in the earliest months and years will leave a deep impact on their overall development and well-being. The parent-child relationship you create in the early years will greatly impact the way your kid behaves in social and emotional settings, especially during the later stages of their life, when they begin interacting with their peers.

As parents, how soon you react to your child’s needs and how you take care of them will teach your little one a lot about understanding their and others’ emotional requirements. So be attentive toward your kid, no matter how small or unimportant their need may seem to you.

Teach Your Child The Importance Of Discipline And Routine

In their earlier years, your little one will be comfortable with following a fixed pattern in their life. Continue sticking to that habit, and show them how to effectively manage time and commitments by following a routine. Teach your child the importance of following basic routines in daily life and discipline. For instance, you can give them little tasks throughout the day, like ensuring to wash their hands with a foaming handwash before eating anything or after coming back home from school or play.

Teach Them About Security And Trust

Two essential life skills that your kid will learn from you are—providing emotional security and learning to trust. As parents, you have the onus to teach your little one the importance of being able to trust and be trustworthy. If your kid can trust you, they will be emotionally secure and confident. Always be there to support your child, and encourage them to do better. Your encouragement will demonstrate that your love is constant, and it will make your little one feel more secure.

Be Sensitive Toward Them

As parents, there will be times when you will feel that nothing is going your way. You might lose your cool, and would want to give up in despair. But wait, think from your child’s point of view, and transform this event into a big life lesson for them—being sensitive toward others’ thoughts and needs.

Instead of losing your cool and criticising your child, understand their perspective, and then explain to them in a natural manner how certain things have to be done differently. For instance, if your child resists eating a particular food, sit with them, understand why they dislike it, and then explain to them the benefits of the food for their health calmly, instead of shouting or criticising.

Be Loving And Kind

Always be loving and kind toward your little one, no matter how angry or stressed you are. Your response to your little one’s needs and day-to-day activities will show them the importance of being kind and loving toward others. Be kind and loving in your regular interactions with your little one, as well as everyone around you to teach them this essential life skill.

Let Your Child Know That Family Is About Being Together

As your little one grows, they will learn the importance and meaning of a family, especially from you. How you interact with other family members will teach them the importance of relationships. Make sure to introduce your child to all family members, and take them to family outings. Try to make family time a regular affair at home.

Maintain A Positive Attitude

Yes, life is tough, but how you handle your stress and problems can teach your child about the importance of having a positive outlook. Your response toward every problem, whether big or child, will demonstrate to your little one that a positive attitude can help overcome every difficulty. Also, teach your child to think positively, and encourage them to learn from their mistakes, instead of giving up.

Encourage Them To Work Hard

No one can teach your little one the value of hard work as much as you can. At times, your munchkin might feel that working hard is something that leaves them tired at the end of the day, but remind them of the intense satisfaction and pleasure hard work gives you. Also, when your little one makes an effort to help you in any task or participate in an activity, praise them for their hard work and effort, instead of the end results.

While there are many roles of parents in child development, the ones we discussed above are the most essential ones and can aid in your little one’s healthy and happy growth. Since you are your child’s first link to the outside world, your every action, gesture, and behaviour can greatly impact your little one’s character. Hence, you must have a positive outlook and behaviour at all times for your little one to incorporate these values into their lifestyle.
