#RIPTikTok: Twitter Goes On A Meme Fest As India Bans 59 Chinese Apps

The Indian government on Monday levied a ban on 59 Chinese apps including social media and networking platforms like TikTok, WeChat, and Helo. The centre shared in a press release that the step was taken in light of the escalating tension between India and China and considering the threat posed by these apps to the country’s “sovereignty and security.” 

The ban was enforced under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 after the Ministry of Information and Technology claimed that it “received many complaints from various sources including several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps… for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India.”

Apart from some popular social media apps and shopping platforms like Shein and Club Factory, here’s a list of all the Chinese apps that have been banned in India:

And while 58 other apps have also been banned, it is the TikTok ban that has become a matter of contention and conversation on social media. While it might have come as rather distressing news to the millions of TikTok users in India and those popular on the app and making money out of it, the step has definitely provided meme fodder to desi Twitterati.
