Whether you’re a Millennial or a Xennial, whether you’ve seen Umrao Jaan or not, if there’s one Bollywood actress from the 70’s that your parents still can’t stop talking about, it is Bhanurekha Ganeshan, better known by her stage name Rekha. Even though she has stopped acting in movies now and is mostly seen at award shows, there are still a lot of things relevant today that have ‘Rekha’ written all over them. To name a few:
- The Holi favourite song Rang Barse – Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s one of the bests.
- The shaadi favourite of drunk uncles In Aankho Ki Masti – Rekha’s evergreen mujra that no actress has successfully replicated to date.
- A Kanjeevaram saree.
I think Kanjeevaram sarees wouldn’t be half as popular if it weren’t for Rekha (just kidding!) She’s always seen wearing a traditional kanjeevaram silk saree with a fresh flower gajra no matter the place, no matter the weather.
Rekha recently wore this gorgeous golden kanjeevaram saree to the Hello Hall of Fame Awards. Here are some of our other favourite Rekha looks that explain why the evergreen silk garment is a must-have in your wardrobe.
Isn’t she looking beautiful? No wonder Kangana Ranaut is often seen trying to copy her classic saree style!

Convinced to buy a new one? Here are a few things you should know about the style:
What’s A Kanjeevaram Saree?
A handloom saree originating in Tamil Nadu (just like Rekha herself), Kanjeevaram is made of pure mulberry silk threads weaved into a fabric. The heavy silk and goldwork give it a royal look, just how we like it. It’s very easy to identify a traditional Kanjeevaram silk saree from others. Just look for the wide contrast borders and gold-like sheen.
Where Can You Wear Them?
A Kanjeevaram is not your everyday saree. You can wear them for weddings and special occasions, maybe to work as well. No more hustling with the tailor about lehengas. Experiment with your blouse design and you’re Rekha-ready.
How Can You Accessorise?
No amount of gold work on the saree can stop Rekha from wearing jewellery. She accessorises and she accessorises big, usually with a gold jewellery set and a matching potli purse along with her bangles. If you like to keep it simple, a minimal jewellery set is all you need. Or you could wear statement drop earrings and no necklace for a more contemporary look.
Here are our top three Kanjeevaram picks for you:
1. The (Office) Party Popper!
POPxo Recommends: Beige & Grey Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree (Rs 12,599) by The Chennai Silks.
2. The Celebration Saree
POPxo Recommends: Kanjeevaram Silk Saree (Rs 13,120) by Sundari Silks.
3. The Pretty In Pink
POPxo Recommends: Green with Yellow Dual Tone Kanjeevaram Silk Saree (Rs 14,546) by Nalli.
Since it’s pure silk, we suggest you wear a Kanjeevaram saree to well air-conditioned areas or when it’s cooler outside. Silk tends to make you feel warm anyway.
