Don’t Panic: 10 Reasons Why You’re Spotting Before Your Period

I had a bit of a panic attack the first time I experienced spotting before my period. In case you’re wondering what spotting is – it’s light vaginal bleeding where you only see a couple of drops now and then instead of the full-fledged period bleeding. There were two things that scared me – a) this was different than my usual bleeding and I couldn’t understand why it was happening and b) I had heard spotting occurs during pregnancy as well. However, pregnancy is only one of the many reasons you could be spotting, here are a few!

1. You’re spotting because you’re ovulating

Spotting when you are ovulating is the most common kind. Usually, it is nothing to worry about. It is majorly due to the increase in your estrogen levels and due to ovarian follicles that burst when they mature. You are most likely to see light red or pink coloured blood during this kind of spotting. This is why it is always a good idea to use a period tracker so you know exactly when you’re ovulating.

2. You’re stressed out

Don’t underestimate the way stress can influence your body. In fact, most of the time, it is because of stress that you’re going through hormonal imbalances. From emotional to physical – stress can come in various forms and could be one of the reasons why you’re spotting.

3. You’re experiencing vaginal dryness

Are you feeling itchy and dry? Vaginal dryness can happen due to various reasons. It usually happens more during or before menopause. But don’t be alarmed if you’re going through vaginal dryness while you are still menstruating. It is best to get it checked by a Gynaecologist.

4. You took a morning after pill

Every morning after pill brings with it certain hormonal changes. This could be one of them. If you’ve recently taken a pill then it is a high possibility that you are not immediately getting your period but simply are experiencing mild spotting.

5. Or changed your contraceptives

Again, a change in contraceptives indicates a change in hormones. Majorly because the contraceptives play with the estrogen levels in your body. So if you’ve started, switched or stopped taking your pills, you’re more likely to experience spotting.

6. You have PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a fairly common phenomenon. In fact, one out of 10 women experience it. Spotting is one of the symptoms of PCOS along with acne and unwanted hair. It is best to consult a doctor if you’re experiencing something similar.

7. This is the first time you’re having your period

Your period can be a confusing phase in early years. Many young girls experience spotting in the first few years of menstruation. It comes along with slight cramps and pain.

8. Or you’re menopausal

When you’re transitioning into menopause, you will experience massive changes in your body and hormones. Menopausal spotting is usually dark red or brown in colour. This marks the end of menstruation in your life and might happen for a couple of months before it finally stops.

9. You might have an ovarian cyst

Sounds a bit scary but ovarian cysts are quite common. In fact, most women don’t even know they have an ovarian cyst until it bursts and they experience light bleeding and abdomen pain.

10. Your thyroid levels are low

Thyroid can bring various changes in your cycle. It also increases the estrogen production in a woman’s body which might lead to spotting. If you’re facing other thyroid symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, hair loss etc, it’s best to get it checked by a doctor.
