Galt Baat Hai: Kudiyon & Mundon, These 10 Stereotypes About Punjabis Are Not Funny

Burrrrrraahhh! Punjus, I mean Punjabis, are THE BEST crowd to hang out with, not just because of their rich culture but also because they’re the most warm-hearted, fun-loving and welcoming bunch. But people across the world seem to have loads of misconceptions about Punjabis. Not that we care about the misconceptions but we have to say, ‘galt baat hai.’

For most people, Punjabiness is all about being loud and pompous but there’s a lot more to us than just that. While a lot of stereotypes might be true, but that is not always the case! So, we’re here to clear the air. But before we get to it, we just want to let you know that yes, we do love our aloo de parathe and makhan and our daru sharu. FYI, our mummy ji’s are savage AF but saddi tan gal hi hor haigi!

1. Oyeeeee Hoyeeee!

Yes, a lot of us can be loud. We might sound like we’re fighting even when we’re just gossiping and having fun, but we’re loud because we’re excited (which almost all the time). And we speak our mind without inhibitions. But honestly, not all of us are loud! Some of us are just born soft-spoken and others with a booming voice, so just deal with it.

2. Maayave!

It’s assumed that Punjabis swear all the time and gussa toh naakh pe rehta hai, but that’s not true. Swearing is our way of showing affection and that means that we really love you. We’re very chilled out but when you piss us off, all hell will break loose because we’re going to *actually* swear like there’s no tomorrow.

3. Botal Kholo!

Yep, we love our daru sharu but we’re not drunkards. We bring out our stock of alcohol when we’re in celebration mode and yes, we do have a good capacity. If you’re jealous and complaining, might we suggest you grab a drink and join us?

4. Tu Kanneda Jana?

It’s never Canada, it’s Kanneda coz it’s our second home. Our accent may be different but why don’t you just enjoy it instead of ranting about it? Everyone has a unique way of speaking and that should be celebrated, not looked down upon.

5. Butter Chicken Kithe Hai?

We love food, and that includes chicken. We don’t have a problem with vegetarians, but we do wonder how one can survive without non-veg and eggs. But we’re not just hardcore foodies, we also have a sweet tooth. FYI, we also love aloo parathas, chole bhature and so much more–butter chicken is not our staple diet!

6. Punjabi & Sikh

via Tenor

No, the two are not synonymous. All Sikhs are Punjabis but all Punjabis are not sikhs. Period. But how does it really matter, ‘coz we’re all sohne munde and sohni kudiyan!

7. OTT Mummy Ji!

via Tenor

Yes, our moms can be loud and dramatic but that’s only when we test them and do chittar-worthy things. But they love us just as much and feed us like there’s no tomorrow.

8. Tu Punjabi Nahi Hai?

We don’t do hatt pare to every non-Punjabi. If you think we don’t get along with non-Punjabis maybe you haven’t met an actual Punjab da puttar or kudi. Because we practically love all the people on earth irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, race, gender and ethnicity. We can get along with just about anyone and we’re proud of it.

9. Nacho Saare!

We love dancing but if you assume we only do bhangra on ‘Taare gin gin’, you couldn’t be more wrong. The fact is that we Punjabis can dance on just about anything, including the motor ki awaz. Just hit play, we’ll be maroing thumkas and we’ll make sure that you do it too!

10. Punjabi Weddings–Kya Baat Hai

via GIPHY

All weddings are beautiful, fun and the perfect occasion for celebrations. But you just can’t compete with Punjabi weddings. They are the absolute best and why wouldn’t they be? Punjabi shaadis are a full package of mama jis and chaha jis, drama, delicious food, colours, dancing and let’s not forget the daru sharu. Punjabi viah nahi dekha toh kya dekha!

The best part about Punjabis is that they live life king size and they’re carefree. And there’s a lot that we can learn from them!
