A Primer For Your Perfume: Marketing Gimmick Or Must-Have?

Okay, one of the main things I’ve been investing in through the past year is perfumes. I love a good, smooth fragrance that lasts all day and I also love changing up my scents to match the occasion. Of course, this is an indulgence, and you don’t need to have a collection as big as mine but when you do start spending as much as I do on fragrances, you expect them to stay.

But most perfumes tend to fade away after the first hour. And the cheaper the perfume, the faster it fades. Well, turns out there’s a primer for your perfumes now and they’re exactly what you expect them to be. So here’s a rundown of what it is and if you really need one or not!

First, What Is A Fragrance Primer?

Fragrance primers are your average beauty gimmick (enough said?). They’re crafted with a blend of moisturisers, barriers, fixatives, and antioxidants like butylene glycol for hydration, acylamide copolymer for that staying power, and tocopheryl acetate to fight off scent-spoiling oxidation. This concoction forms an invisible shield on your skin, making your perfume last longer and smell just as intended.

They usually come in a clear, fragrance-free spray and work undercover to extend the life of your fragrance. By creating a nourishing layer on your skin, it ensures your perfume doesn’t fade into oblivion by lunchtime. It’s like a primer for your skin but for your scent – all you have to do is prep your pulse points and revel in the lasting aroma.

Why Do I Need One?

Fragrance primers address one of the most common gripes in the scent world: longevity. This product is all about making that beloved fragrance cling to you just a little bit longer, without mixing with your body’s natural odours or pH levels.

Actually, Do I Really Need One?

In a world where we prime our faces, eyelids, and even our hair, why not our scent? This is one line of reasoning I simply cannot get behind. If you’ve done your research on how to make your perfumes last longer, there are so many alternative to buying a bottle of clear spray for Rs.1000 that might or might not extend the scent of your fragrance. Here are a few:

Before applying any perfumes or mists, moisturise your skin with a fragrance free oil-based lotion or cream. These enhance the original scent and keep it on much longer than expected. Additionally, if you have a moisturiser/oil that is the exact scent of your perfume – apply it to your pulse points and you’ll smell like your favourite perfume all day. For best results, moisturise after a shower and before spritzing.

Another alternative to this unnecessary product is Vaseline. I’m a big fan of Vaseline, mainly because of how many different things you can use it for. The petroleum jelly has a subtle slick that has the capacity to hold onto your perfume much longer than bare skin. Just rub some on your pulse points before you spray on your scent of choice.

The last hack is to pick up an eau de parfum (EDP) as opposed to an eau de toilette (EDT). Why? Well, EDPs have a much giver concentration of fragrance oil, around 25% as opposed to the eau de toilette’s 15%. This means an EDP will last significantly longer than an EDT, but also means they will be more expensive!

I mean if you’re tired of your perfume disappearing on you, it might be time to give this innovation a shot. Or maybe just get a tub of Vaseline and hack your way into smelling good for longer. After all, why spend when you can save and get the same results?
