Samar had a difficult time growing up. He was bullied in school for being too ‘boyish’ and even contemplated committing suicide once. As he grew up, he realised that he needed to change something about himself and so he did. Earlier named Kshama, Samar was born a girl who transformed into a man & proudly so. Considered a social taboo across India, Sex Reassignment Surgery or Gender Correction Surgery has still not been accepted by the majority. People who need to get their sex changed, have to constantly battle the social stigma attached to the concept. Let’s read Kshama’s journey of turning into Samar.
“I was bullied in school for being too ‘Boyish’, called names like ‘chakka’ – and I even tried to commit suicide- but when every attempt to ‘feel better’ failed, I stopped trying.
When I was 23, I shifted to another city to study. It was only when I started living alone, and had a little bit of freedom that I realised that instead of giving up, I needed to fight to live life according to my terms. I looked for support online, and came across ‘gender corrective surgery’ – I knew I had to go for it… it was my only shot”, Samar told Humans Of Bombay.
“I was scared of not being accepted, but I decided to come out to my parents anyway. I was ready for all sorts of backlash, but when I picked up the phone and told my mother ‘I don’t identify as a woman’- all she said was, ‘I know’. It felt like a weight had been lifted off of my chest. After some time when I went back home, everyone was so warm. When I told them that I wanted to get the surgery done, my entire family supported me without any judgements.”, shared Samar.
