For far too long, we’ve pitted women against each other. No matter where you go, the filmy stereotype that ‘aurat hi aurat ki dushman hai’ will stay with you. Women are supposed to hate other women, be jealous of their success, humiliate the other one behind their backs and just generally pull each other down while men can have picture perfect friendships. Friendships that are made of beer nights and video games. But what about the beauty of female friendships? The one where a 2 AM distress call becomes your saviour or the one where you can actually discuss your emotions without judgement.
While we’re here, breaking one stereotype after another that women have dealt with for so long, it’s time we openly came out and celebrated our female friendships. Like Roxane Gay said “Abandon the cultural myth that all female friendships must be bitchy, toxic, or competitive. This myth is like heels and purses — pretty but designed to slow women down.”
Do You Really Need A Girl Gang?
Yes you do. We’ve all been told at some point in our lives, and have now come to believe, that friendships with men are ‘less drama’. But the point is, friendship with men is less soul connection too. Nobody can understand your struggle or your life better than a woman who is going through the same. Even if she’s not going through the same, she will still understand you better than any man ever could.
I don’t want to pull down any friendship with men but the connection we have with our female friends is something else altogether. Whether it’s relationships, sex or family issues, all it takes is a text or a look and they know what’s wrong and how to set it right. The connection just naturally runs deeper. They are your soul sisters.

What Does It Mean?
All this entails is that we need to celebrate female friendships more than we currently do. While cinema has started incorporating positive examples of this in movies like ‘Sex And The City’ or ‘Friends’ and closer to home, we’ve had beautiful movies like ‘Queen’, ‘Dor’, ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’, ‘Pink’ or ‘Parched’, it still needs to become more mainstream than it already is.
Show the world how much you love your female friends. Put up pictures and show off the beautiful bond you share with your girl gang. Let them know that women can be, and ALREADY ARE, each other’s support system and family. After all, no one can understand a woman better than another woman! The world needs to see and experience the beauty that is female bonding!

In The End…
…Know that no matter where you go, your female besties will be there with you. In soul, if not in person!
“Women understand. We may share experiences, make jokes, paint pictures, and describe humiliations that mean nothing to men, but women understand. The odd thing about these deep and personal connections of women is that they often ignore barriers of age, economics, worldly experience, race, culture – all the barriers that, in male or mixed society, had seemed so difficult to cross.” – Gloria Steinem
