Despite being home to the 7th wonder of the world, Taj Mahal, Agra has mostly been a one or two-day holiday destination for most people. Why? Well, once you’ve admired the token of Shah Jahan’s love for Mumtaz, you probably feel that there isn’t much to do in the city. History and culture have been the crux of that city. So, if you ever plan to explore Agra in its true form, there’s are a lot of other places you can visit.
1. Visit Agra Fort

This heritage site is one of the most important Mughal forts in India. Emperor Akbar had rebuilt the fort using red sandstones in 1558. It took 8 years for the process to finish. After Shah Jahan’s death in 1666, the fort lost its grandeur. In the 18th century, it was repeatedly invaded and captured. Many parts of the buildings are destroyed but there are a few areas in the fort that perfectly matches the description of a fairy-tale mansion.
The ticket to the fort is Rs 550 for foreigners and Rs 40 for Indians.
2. Other Tombs & Monuments

Agra also has two other tombs with impressive Islamic architecture and Fatehpur Sikri. One of the two tombs situated in Sikandra contains the body of Emperor Akbar. The tomb was completed in 1614. The ticket to this tomb is Rs 210 for foreigners and Rs 20 for Indians.
The tomb of Itmad-ud-daulah was the first of its kind. It was the first tomb to be made in white marble. It’s often referred to as Baby Taj. It contains the body of Mirza Ghiyas Beg who served under Akbar. Later, his daughter was married to Akbar’s son, Jehangir.
Fatehpur Sikri is another side destination for everyone who visits Agra. However, touts and beggars have become a big issue in the area for tourist. The city is now deserted but was founded by Emperor Akbar in 1571.
3. Hangout in Mehtab Bagh

A visit to Taj Mahal demands a fee and well, you have to literally breeze through a huge crowd sometimes. But if you want to avoid all that and still enjoy the view, Mehtaab Bagh, also known as Moonlight Garden is your destination to do so. You can clearly see the Taj Mahal from the bank of the river. It’s situated exactly opposite to Taj and was actually built before the Taj Mahal by Emperor Babur.
The entry fee to the garden is Rs 200 for foreigners and Rs 15 for Indians.
4. Take A Walk Through Kachhpura Village

The Mughal Heritage Walk is an initiative by CURE (Center of Urban and Regional Excellence). It is to help villagers develop, make money and improve their living conditions through tourism. It’s a 1-kilometre walk where you are guided by trained tour guides from the village itself. The walk takes place on the riverside opposite the Taj Mahal, crosses through the Kachhpura village and ends at Mehtab Bagh. During the walk, you will also get to see some lesser known monuments.
5. Go To The Bazaars of Old City

Want to experience the heart of Agra? Head to the 100-year old market. It is situated beside the 17th century Jama Masjid Mosque. The narrow lanes of the market have a lot to offer – spices, clothes, jewellery, shoes, crafts and of course, snacks. Known as Kinari Bazaar, the streets of the market might be overwhelming for some.
6. Check Out Agra’s Bear Rescue Center

Cuteness overload! Agra Bear Rescue Centre is operated by Wildlife SOS. The centre houses sloth bears which were captured and forced to dance. The centre opens every day from sunrise to sunset. You can get access to the enclosed areas and watch a short educational movie. However, if you want to take a closer look, a Rs 1,500 pass will get you a guide who will help get closer to the bear. But I recommend you book it in advance.
The entry fee is Rs 500 for foreigners and Rs 50 for Indians.
7. Experience the Village-Life in Korai

On your way to Fatehpur Sikri, you can drop by to experience the tribal nature Korai village. The inhabitants of the village were the keepers of the sloth bears. Since the bears were taken away without compensation, the villagers have been struggling for a steady income. You can experience the daily village life of the natives here and meet the magician in the village, Mohammad. The entry fee for the experience is $10.
