After spreading ‘Greenery’ in 2017, Pantone colour of the year 2018 has finally been announced and it’s a shade of purple. To be precise, it’s “PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet.”
Although, ultraviolet by definition is invisible but note the space between Ultra Violet, it directs the shade towards the violet colour family. The colour is chosen every year in the month of December, not only is relevant for food, fashion, beauty and design trends but also reflects ‘what’s needed in our world today,’ Laurie Pressman, Pantone Color Institute’s vice president said in a statement.
So, what does purple say about the needs of our planet in 2018? According to Pantone, it’s “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”.
Prince, David Bowie or Jimi Hendrix as per Pantone, they “brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.” Think purple-toned pictures of stars across the galaxy, limitless sky, the mysteries of cosmos and purple-lit meditation spaces, you’ll get the calm vibes. And if you can recall, in Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple, the colour purple is presented as an example of God-given beauty.
In worldly depictions, the colour can be associated with royalty. Hence, it is no surprise that we’ve spotted Queen Elizabeth, Kate Middleton and of course, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan don the colour in the past. So there you have it. Your Pantone swatches will be talking about luxury, power and mysteries of the cosmos and even Nasa agrees to that.
The colour is certainly not new to the fashion world. In fact, many designers chose their favourite colour on the ramp, much ahead of time.
