Is India Making The World Unhappy? Report Proves Pakistan Is The Happiest Country In South Asia

On World Happiness Day, the annual World Happiness Report carried out by Sustainable Development Solutions, a global initiative for the United Nations, has once again stated that India is quite an unhappy nation. The country with 133.92 crore population is on the 140th spot out of 156 countries, falling seven spots since the survey was carried out in 2018.

On the other hand, Pakistan, on the 67th spot, is the happiest country in South Asia! It even surpassed Bhutan, which is at 95th, Bangladesh at 125th, China at 93rd, Sri Lanka at 130th and India at 140th spot.

The annual World Happiness Report ranks the world’s 156 countries on how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. The six key variables that help determine happiness are income, freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity.

So, what went wrong with Indians? Well, according to statistics, almost everything. The keys facts that are used to determine happiness, like healthy life expectancy and income, aren’t the country’s strongest suits. Although life expectancy has increased in India by more than 10 years in the last 20 years according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), India’s life expectancy is still not as high as developing nations like China and the U.S. Plus, the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) states that the unemployment rate in both rural and urban India is at its highest since 1972!

What’s worse? India might be responsible for an overall drop in world happiness over the past few years, the report indicates. In the last few years, India’s happiness has dropped consistently, from 118th spot in 2016, 122nd in 2017 to 132nd in 2018. Now, India stands at 140th alongside Madagascar on 143rd and Liberia from West Africa on the 141st spot.

The top five spots on the happiness report were held by Finland, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and the Netherlands. The United Kingdom and the United States were on the 15th and 19th place for happiness.

People in war-zone country of South Sudan are the unhappiest, followed by the Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Rwanda and Yemen.
