Oxford Dictionary’s Word Of The Year ‘Goblin Mode’ Has Left Us In Splits

Aren’t there days when you just don’t feel like doing anything? There’s a term for it. It’s called going into the ‘Goblin Mode’! It has been crowned as the term of the year by the Oxford Dictionary. More than 3000,000 English speakers voted over two weeks to choose between three words which were screened by editors at Oxford University Press. ‘Goblin Mode’ won by 318,956 votes, followed by ‘Metaverse’ and ‘IStandWith’ as the first and second runner-ups. Here’s everything you need to know about the term:

What Exactly Is ‘Goblin Mode’?

It is a slang term that defines a type of behaviour that is unapologetically self-indulgent and lazy. Basically, it refers to embracing the comforts of depravity. Imagine a Saturday afternoon. You have a thousand errands to run but you choose to make a comforting bowl of instant noodles and devour them. You’ve soiled your clothes and bedsheets with the noodles while binge-watching an entire series on Netflix and are preparing to start another. Do you feel like a slob? Yes. Do you care? Absolutely not. That’s Goblin Mode for you!

The Epic ‘Goblin Mode’ Controversy

Twitter

Many of us heard the term ‘goblin mode’ in Julia Fox’s viral tweet back in February 2022. Here’s what happened: In February 2022, a Twitter user tweeted what looked like a screenshot of an article from a popular media site. Julia Fox opened up about her ‘difficult’ relationship with Kanye West ‘He didn’t like when I went goblin mode” the headline read. It racked up 116,000 likes and thousands of retweets. But guess what, Fox never said that nor did the article actually exist, but that didn’t stop it from going viral. The meme became so popular that the actor herself addressed the same on social media.

From being circulated as a viral meme to becoming Oxford’s Word Of The Year 2022, ‘Goblin Mode’ has surely come a long way. And guess what? It is going to define our spirit in the current winter months.

That’s all folks. We are going into goblin mode now!
