It was in October last year when Chennai Super Kings lost IPL 2020 after a series of disappointing performances. A lot of fans expressed their frustration on social media platforms by blaming the players. While we did understand their feelings, what we didn’t get was their audacity to drag MS Dhoni’s daughter into all of this. What kind of human in this world could even think of threatening a merely five-year-old girl for her father’s performance on a cricket pitch? Answer: Humans with no conscience.
The anonymity that social media platforms provide to people has given them the advantage to bend their morals as per their convenience. As a result, trolling, passing derogatory comments, abuses, and threats have become extremely common. While all of us have to bear its consequences every now and then, celebrities are mostly the ones at its receiving end. And, one such celebrity who is no stranger to such brutal online trolling is Neha Dhupia.
In 2020, the actress made a comment on her show Rodies Revolution that raised havoc on social media. As a repercussion, Neha was trolled left, right, and centre and had to even disable the comment section on her Instagram handle.
In a recent interview, the Devi actress expressed that she felt shocked while looking at the trolls that casually threatened and demeaned her. She also explained how she coped up with all the online bullying and said, “I don’t understand how trolls can abuse someone’s wife or daughter and then go share a meal with their own family. I think I have the ability to attach and detach. So I deal with it in my own way, but I don’t think it’s right. And to a great extent, it accounts for emotional abuse and that’s not right.”
Neha had bashed a guy in one of the Roadies Revolution episodes for slapping his girlfriend who was apparently, cheating on him and five other men. In the episode, she was heard saying that it was the woman’s choice if she wanted to date multiple men at once. Moreover, the problem must be with the men if she wasn’t loyal. Well, needless to say, the problematic comment did not go well with the audience and she was called out for it on Twitter.
However, the trolling soon took an extremely problematic turn. The actress and even her family were hurled with derogatory abuses and violent threats. Neha had later said in an interview, “Unfortunately, a small chunk of what I said was kind of highlighted, whereas what I was trying to imply was the fact that under no circumstances is domestic violence, okay and therefore I think only half of it was picked up and I was trolled extensively for it as I am still being. Honestly, whatever I had to say I took time and put it out in a statement and I still stand by it.” Neha had said in her statement that while adultery was unacceptable, domestic violence was an absolute no.
Online bullying and trolling can have a severe effect on someone’s mental health. There are many guidelines on all social media platforms to report trolling and bullying. However, the world would definitely be a better place if people always stayed responsible for their actions. Seriously guys, it doesn’t cost anything to be decent.
