Almost seven years ago Ekta Kapoor conceived the Naagin-verse. All things fantastical and grand, the first season of the show opened to a great reception and established Mouni Roy as Indian TV’s megastar. For Ekta, there was no stopping after that as she went on churning out one instalment of the show after other. And while the frenzy never really died, the subject matter was definitely compromised in the seasons that followed. What started as a folklore based fantasy show soon turned into a cringe-fest as we saw an odd bunch of Ichchadhari reptiles and animals taking over the prime time TV slot. This explains why we braced ourselves for a lot of cringe when Ekta announced a 6th season of the show last year and let’s just say that all our fears just materialised.
A brand new trailer for the upcoming season has been released now and the netizens are aghast. In one of the most ludicrous Naagin promos to date, we see the makers trying to build a Naagin Vs pandemic plot as the narrator declares “Badal rahi hai duniya, badal chuki hai naagin!” We are also told about a “padosi desh” that has apparently conspired against the entire world by using a virus as its weapon.
“Saal 2020 mein ek attack poori duniya ko badal dega. Padosi desh k virus ko hatiyaar bana kar, har taraf mahamaari faila dega,” we hear and are then told that the naagin has evolved and is here to save the nation. “Zeher hi Zeher ko kaat sakta hai,” is the show’s premise and you just can not unsee the promo after watching it once. Here, take a look:
‘Naagin is the real pandemic of India,’ a Twitter user has commented on the promo and at this point, we would have to agree. To begin with, we gotta ask—is this a children’s show ‘coz we can not even imagine sensible adults watching this crapfest unironically. Seriously, what is that weird round table conference that we witness in the promo?
On a more important note, we should seek a cure for this serious care of tone-deafness that Indian TV show makers have been suffering with for the longest time now. We are all literally trying to survive the third wave of a pandemic right now. Many have lost their loved ones to the same in the past couple of years and yet Ekta has decided to turn a blind eye to it and is all set to serve the subject matter as entertainment. Not cool!
That said, we gotta agree with the show’s makers on one point—Naagin has indeed changed. For the worse, of course!
