I had just started working and Abhinav was in his third year of engineering college when this happened. Though we were classmates in school, we became close friends after moving to Delhi for graduation. We would talk to each other about everything under the sun – our relationships, career plans and sometimes, about our sex lives too.
He was the constant in my life. Someone I could always fall back on. Amidst all the confusion and chaos in the other aspects of our lives, we found solace in talking to each other. We were both going through a rough phase. He had broken up with his girlfriend who he considered ‘the love of his life’ and I was struggling to convince my boyfriend to give our long distance relationship a chance.
Abhinav invited me for a sleepover the day he had his college fest. The plan was to go to the fest, dance it out and get sloshed. But when I reached his place, nothing went as planned. I was very hungry by the time I reached his place. We cooked white sauce pasta together, and sat down to eat it and have some beer. Our conversation started with a discussion about our love lives, and about how we felt betrayed and alone. It was sad but relieving to talk to someone so openly about it.
Three hours later, we were still sitting and talking about our random crushes in school and college, and were quite drunk by then! All of a sudden, he told me that he wanted to make a confession. I was surprised as he proceeded to tell me that he developed a huge crush on me when we entered college, thanks to our level of understanding and comfort with one another.
I told him how much I loved him – as a friend – and how he has been my support system through all the struggle I have faced with regards to my relationship. I kept talking till he suddenly bent forward and kissed me on my lips. Before I could try to push him away, he moved away himself and said, ‘I am really sorry. I got carried away.’
I was a little taken aback, but since we were drunk, I kept the conversation going and tried to not make it too awkward. I think we passed out soon after. I woke up the next morning to find him sitting right in front of me. Before I could say anything, he said, ‘Hey, I am really sorry about last night. It’s okay if you don’t want to talk to me anymore but I just wanted to tell you that you have been my source of strength all this while. I am sorry. I really am!’
I decided to handle it with maturity because he was a friend I never wanted to lose. So I let it go. It’s been more than one year since my best friend kissed me. We are still the best of friends and I never let this incident come between our friendship.
